As of Sep 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for sol gel in the United States is $20.74, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $24.28 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a sol-gel technologist do?

Sol-Gel technologists are specialists who develop and apply the sol-gel process, a chemical method for creating solid materials from small molecules. They typically work in materials science, chemistry, or engineering fields, focusing on designing coatings, ceramics, or nanomaterials with specific properties. Their responsibilities include preparing sol-gel solutions, optimizing processing conditions, and analyzing the resulting materials for use in products like optics, sensors, or biomedical devices. The role often involves research, laboratory work, and collaboration with other scientists or engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sol-gel scientist?

To thrive as a Sol-Gel Scientist, you need a strong background in chemistry, materials science, and laboratory research, typically supported by a relevant degree such as a BS, MS, or PhD. Familiarity with analytical instruments (e.g., FTIR, XRD, SEM), sol-gel process optimization, and laboratory safety protocols is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in designing experiments and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for successful innovation and development of advanced materials in academic or industrial settings.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in sol-gel research and production, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Sol-Gel research and production often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency in material properties, scaling up laboratory processes to industrial production, and ensuring the purity of precursors. Addressing these requires meticulous process control, ongoing collaboration with quality assurance teams, and staying updated with advancements in Sol-Gel chemistry. Close teamwork with engineers and materials scientists is also essential for troubleshooting and optimizing synthesis protocols, contributing to both individual growth and project success.

What is the difference between Sol Gel vs Coatings Technician?

AspectSol GelCoatings Technician
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in chemistry, materials science, or related fieldUsually requires high school diploma or associate degree, with specialized training in coatings application
Work EnvironmentLaboratory or research settings, developing and testing materialsIndustrial or manufacturing facilities, applying coatings on surfaces
Industry UsageUsed in research, development, and advanced material applicationsCommonly employed in manufacturing, construction, and maintenance industries

While Sol Gel specialists focus on developing and researching sol-gel materials in labs, Coatings Technicians apply coatings in industrial settings. Both roles require knowledge of materials, but Sol Gel professionals are more research-oriented, whereas Coatings Technicians focus on application and surface treatment.
