How much do electrochemistry research jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in electrochemistry research?
Success in Electrochemistry Research requires a strong background in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, usually supported by an advanced degree such as an MS or PhD in a related field. Familiarity with electrochemical instrumentation (e.g., potentiostats, galvanostats), data analysis software, and laboratory safety protocols is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help researchers excel in collaborative and multidisciplinary environments. Mastery of these skills enables effective experimentation, data interpretation, and contribution to innovative solutions in industrial or academic research settings.
What are the typical career advancement paths for professionals in electrochemistry research?
Professionals in Electrochemistry Research often begin as research assistants or associates and can advance to roles such as lead researcher, project manager, or principal investigator. With experience, many pursue opportunities in specialized sectors like energy storage, sensor development, or materials science, or transition to supervisory and managerial positions overseeing larger research teams. Additionally, advancements in the field may enable movement into academia, patent law, or technical consulting roles. Pursuing further education, publishing research, and cultivating interdisciplinary skills can accelerate career growth and open new pathways in both industry and academia.
What is electrochemistry research?
An Electrochemistry Research job involves studying chemical processes that involve electron transfer, typically in areas like energy storage, corrosion, sensors, or electrolysis. Researchers in this field work on developing and improving batteries, fuel cells, and electrochemical sensors. They conduct experiments, analyze data, and design new materials or methods for various applications. This role is common in industries such as energy, healthcare, and environmental science, as well as in academic and government research institutions.

Job description
Sigma Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking postdoctoral candidates who are passionate about electrochemical research. The successful candidate will join a team developing methods for electrodeposition that involve: 1) novel electrochemical waveforms, 2) electrolyte development, 3) electrochemical, chemical, and physical analysis of resultant films, and 4) industrial electrochemical processes such as separations, machining, and electroforming.
There is specific need for someone interested in electrochemical processing critical materials, in-situ characterization, and electrochemical analysis of metal ions in solution. Supplementary areas of interest include electropolishing, corrosion, electrochemical machining, and surface engineering. Projects could also involve process monitoring, rapid experimentation, and AI/ML guided process experimentation. Specific project goals will stem from the candidate's interest, the mission needs within the team, and the availability of funding.
A postdoctoral researcher is expected to help guide the overall technical direction of their project(s) with their mentor. Candidates will be capable of conducting independent research in small teams and be able to communicate their findings in such a way that enables future applications.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Postdoctoral Research Associate
The successful candidate will have:
- Extensive experimental experience with electrochemistry, preferably electroplating and/or electropolishing techniques and processes.
- Background in electrochemistry, including knowledge of electrochemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting electroplating equipment such as plating baths, power supplies/potentiostats, or analytical instruments.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) as demonstrated by experience presenting research results at technical conferences and authoring peer-reviewed journal articles.
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field completed within the last five years, or soon to be completed, is required.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance which normally requires U.S. Citizenship
- Experience with in-situ electrochemical characterization.
- Experience in ex situ characterization techniques like SEM, XRD, XPS, and electrochemical testing.
- Experience with AI/ML for experimental materials development/discovery.
- Experience with water sensitive chemistry
Note to Applicants:
When submitting your application electronically to this vacancy, the following are required for submission.
- A cover letter summarizing your skills, research areas of interest, and desire to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory
- A curriculum vitae or résumé that contains the following information: education, major, GPA, relevant work experience, relevant technical skills.
