Job Description

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Drainage Technician Trainee performs manual labor and assists in construction, maintenance, and drainage system operations. This position involves the use of hand tools, support for skilled workers, and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of job sites.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists with installation or repair of water and sewer lines, including making new water or sewer taps.
  • Inspects and cleans manholes to ensure proper function and safety.
  • Hauls and unloads equipment, materials, and supplies for work projects.
  • Operates hand tools and assists with light to medium construction tasks.
  • May vacuum and water jet residential sewer lines.
  • Provides traffic control during work projects to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
  • Provides assistance to other workers as needed, ensuring smooth workflow on the job site.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Operations of motorized construction and maintenance equipment and vehicles.
  • Safety procedures and practices.
  • Personal computer and various software applications.

Skill in:

  • Handling situations requires diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Providing efficient customer service.
  • Operating various motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Using various hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent; This is a trainee role, and the candidate will learn on the job. No prior experience is required, but a strong willingness to learn and the ability to follow instructions are essential.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
