Summary
Occupational Therapist 1 is professional work in administering occupational therapy programs in a county hospital and in homes. Occupation Therapists 1 are responsible for performing a full range of occupational therapy activities following physician prescriptions, and combining professional therapeutic skills with knowledge of fundamental theory and objectives of rehabilitation. Employees in this classification develop therapy treatment plans, evaluate patient progress, decide on treatment modifications and prepare analytical progress notes. Incumbents perform in rehabilitation, psychiatric and continuing patient care settings. Treatment involves a variety of media including arts and crafts, pre-vocational testing, functional therapy, program for activities of daily living and educational skills. An additional responsibility is for the training and daily supervision of Occupational Therapy Assistants. Work is performed in accordance with recognized professional principles and techniques, and professional judgment is required in development and modification of treatment plans and evaluation of patients' progress.
Responsibilities
Demonstrates continued competence in the application of growth and development principles in the delivery of treatment to patients aging from adolescence to geriatrics. Selects and administers appropriate initial evaluation to referred patient's with varying diagnoses and all age groups. Collaborates with patients and family in the development of an individual treatment plan, identifying safe, realistic, and age appropriate goals while maintaining a sensitivity to age specific needs. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the information to implement effective therapeutic interventions specific to patient's age. Re-evaluates patients at appropriate intervals, changing treatment program as indicated. Reports on patient progress through progress notes and/or oral reports in patient team meetings and rounds. Records daily statistics, documentation and billing information related to patient treatment. Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team relative to patient treatment and progress. Develops age-specific patient education materials and/or classes as required. Supervises Occupational Therapy student interns. Attends and participates in unit, departmental, mandatory rehabilitation center, and hospital in-services to ensure appropriate understanding and knowledge of policies and procedures related to all patient and employee safety issues. Attends selected continuing education programs for competency in specialty areas of treatment. Attends appropriate departmental meetings. Coordinates and prioritizes own time in relation to the overlapping demands of patient treatment, teaching, in-service and other assigned duties. Assists in the development and implementation of the department's quality improvement program with guidance from department head and rehabilitation Q.I. Coordinator. Demonstrates competence in the safe and effective use of all equipment used in the Occupational Therapy department. Develops pediatric patient education materials and/or classes as required. Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list. Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned. Performs additional advanced job duties, as outlined in the Rehab Clinical Ladder, which must be pre-approved and determined by the Rehab Committee.
Experience
Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
Education
Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and completion of an internship program are required.

Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.
Credentials
Valid Florida license as an Occupational Therapist is required. American Heart Association and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
Unit Specific Credential
AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity
