What does a software testing engineer do?

A Software Testing Engineer is responsible for evaluating software applications to ensure they function correctly and meet specified requirements. They design and execute test plans, identify bugs or issues, and work closely with developers to resolve defects. Their role helps maintain software quality, reliability, and performance before the product is released to users. They may use both manual and automated testing methods to cover different aspects of the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software testing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Testing Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, test design techniques, and programming or scripting languages, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems (like Jira), and certifications like ISTQB are highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure software quality, minimize defects, and deliver reliable products to end users.

What are some common collaboration practices between software testing engineers and developers during the software development lifecycle?

Software Testing Engineers frequently collaborate with developers through activities such as sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and code reviews. They often provide feedback on testability during requirements analysis and work closely with developers to understand new features and identify potential issues early. Effective communication ensures that defects are clearly documented, and joint debugging sessions are common to resolve complex bugs efficiently. This close collaboration helps maintain a high-quality product and fosters a culture of continuous improvement within the team.

Job description

Overview
Join a growing and innovative organization as a SCADA Software Technician, where you’ll play a key role in delivering and supporting Ignition-based solutions that drive operational efficiency. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of software testing, configuration, and deployment while serving as a critical escalation point for complex technical support issues. Working closely with a distributed engineering team, you’ll help ensure reliable system performance and contribute to developing scalable best practices.

In addition to leading software configuration for new customer projects, this role will serve as the Tier 2 software support lead for existing projects—diagnosing complex software-related issues, resolving them when possible, and collaborating with engineering for escalations. You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining technical documentation for SCADA configurations, software features, and support processes to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Software Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Test and validate new Ignition features, scripts, and user interface components
  • Perform functional, integration, and regression testing in controlled environments
  • Document test cases, results, and release notes for internal and client use

SCADA Configuration & Deployment

  • Lead configuration efforts for new client implementations, including tag setup, alarms, historian logging, and dashboards
  • Partner with field teams during commissioning to ensure successful system performance

Tier 2 Software Support

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for advanced software-related support issues
  • Troubleshoot and resolve configuration, scripting, and integration challenges
  • Collaborate with Tier 1 support to improve troubleshooting processes
  • Escalate complex issues to engineering with clear documentation and replication steps

Documentation & Standards

  • Develop and maintain configuration templates, deployment guides, and troubleshooting documentation
  • Track system configurations and software updates with accuracy
  • Ensure all documentation remains current and standardized across teams

Qualifications

Required:

  • 2–4 years of experience with SCADA software configuration and deployment
  • Strong proficiency in tag configuration, Python scripting, alarms, and historian setup
  • Working knowledge of PLC/RTU communications (Modbus, MQTT, OPC-UA)
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation

Preferred:

  • Ignition certification
  • Experience in agricultural automation or irrigation systems
  • Familiarity with wireless telemetry (LoRa, cellular)
  • Experience with Git/version control and QA workflows
  • Knowledge of REST API integrations

What Success Looks Like

  • Zero major defects after deployment of new Ignition features
  • Quick and effective resolution of Tier 2 issues
  • Standardized, documented, and repeatable configurations
  • Clear guidance available for support and deployment teams

Why This Opportunity
This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of mission-critical SCADA systems, collaborate with a highly skilled engineering team, and directly impact operational efficiency in a rapidly evolving technical environment.
