Software Per Diem information

What is a software per diem?

A Software Per Diem is a software professional who works on a temporary or as-needed basis, rather than as a full-time employee. These individuals are typically hired for short-term projects, to cover staff shortages, or to provide specialized expertise. Payment is usually made on a daily basis, hence 'per diem,' which means 'per day' in Latin. Software Per Diem roles can include software developers, engineers, or IT specialists who work for multiple clients or employers as independent contractors. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the worker and the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software per diem?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and experience using version control systems like Git are typically required. Effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability are valuable soft skills that help engineers collaborate and respond to changing project needs. These competencies are essential for building reliable software, meeting project goals, and contributing positively to development teams.

What types of projects do software per diem professionals typically work on, and how is their workload managed?

Software Per Diem professionals are often brought in to handle specific, short-term projects such as software bug fixes, feature enhancements, or urgent development tasks. Their workload is usually project-based, with assignments varying in duration and complexity depending on the client's needs. They frequently work independently or as temporary additions to existing development teams, collaborating with in-house staff through online communication tools. Flexibility and adaptability are key, as priorities can shift quickly based on project deadlines and client requirements.

  • Fast-Paced Editing: Edit news stories on deadline in the field or in the newsroom using non-linear editing software.
  • Digital & Equipment Maintenance: Contribute video clips, stills, and story details to our digital and social media channels. Keep all assigned field gear clean, fully operational, and maintained.

What You Bring to the Table
  • Technical Mastery: Skilled in news videography and editing under daily, high-stakes deadline pressure.
  • Tool Proficiency: Experience with (or ability to quickly learn) Sony video cameras, Adobe Premiere, BitCentral, iNews, LiveU/LU-Smart, and field audio equipment.
  • Communication & Professionalism: Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and politely with public officials, news sources, station staff, and the general public.
  • Computer & Tech Literacy: Strong digital literacy with an eagerness to adapt to evolving field technologies.

Education & Experience
  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a news videojournalist (or equivalent role) in a commercial TV newsroom.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university preferred.

Requirements
  • Driving: Must have a valid driver's license and an exemplary, clean driving record.
  • Schedule: Per diem scheduling requires operational agility to support breaking news and evolving coverage needs.
