What is a software engineer volunteer?

A Software Engineer Volunteer is an unpaid role where individuals contribute their coding skills to projects for non-profits, open-source initiatives, or startups. Volunteers assist with software development, debugging, and sometimes testing or documentation. This role provides hands-on experience, helps build a portfolio, and allows professionals to give back to the community while improving their technical skills.

What kinds of projects does a software engineer volunteer typically work on?

As a Software Engineer Volunteer, you may work on a variety of projects, such as building and maintaining web or mobile applications, automating workflows, or assisting with data analysis and reporting tools for nonprofits or community organizations. Projects often address real-world needs, like increasing accessibility, improving user experience, or supporting fundraising platforms. You might work independently or as part of a diverse, cross-functional team, often collaborating remotely. This experience provides valuable opportunities to refine your technical skills, expand your professional network, and make a meaningful impact through your expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the software engineer volunteer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Software Engineer Volunteer, a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, knowledge of software development methodologies, and experience with languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript are essential. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), collaborative platforms (such as GitHub), and possibly agile project management tools is highly advantageous. Excellent communication, teamwork, and time-management skills can set you apart in a volunteer environment where resources and supervision may be limited. These competencies are vital for contributing effectively, solving problems independently, and supporting organizational goals in a collaborative, often fast-paced setting.

Job description

About Mytra:
We're creating an entirely new way to solve the most ubiquitous problem in industry - moving and storing material. We're applying robotics and distributed software to create a new class of product for this $1T market. We're focused on the supply chain industry first. The industry is in a massive bind with the continued growth of e-commerce, sharp rise in costs, and supply chain disruptions. What has been a "sleepy" industry for decades is now at the epicenter of sustaining the global economy.
About the role
Mytra's robotics team is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to develop safety-critical software on our robotic fleet. You'll own how safety-relevant software gets built and scaled - taking the safety concept and architecture and realizing it through the development process to production. This role will cover projects such as localization, fail-safe communications, and motion-stopping, using estimation, monitoring, and safe software design best practices to build up safety functions. You will shape how we ship safety rigor across the stack as we scale.
What you'll do:
  • Own projects such as signal redundancy, sensor fusion, safety-critical state estimation, and fail-safe wireless communications
  • Implement highly performant, real-time software for critical safety functions on robots that mitigate both machine and human hazards
  • Cross-collaboration with computer vision / firmware / systems teams to realize safety goals and deliver safety-critical software in a scalable and agile environment
  • Select and integrate the safety-relevant toolchain, including safety-rated or qualified compilers, static analysis, and coding-standard tooling
  • Contribute to HARA and software DFMEA from the implementation side, informing the safety analysis with realistic failure modes and mitigations
  • Build robust diagnostic tools to detect, reproduce, and root-cause faults in the field
  • Mentor software developers and contribute to increased test coverage and coding best practices across the stack

Ideal Candidates:
  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience in taking in-house safety-critical software from concept to production
  • Strong experience with C++ and Python
  • Demonstrated safety-critical software development experience, ideally under a recognized functional-safety standard (IEC 61508, ISO 13849, ISO 3691-4, ISO 26262, DO-178C, EN 50128, IEC 62304, or similar)
  • Experience with embedded and real-time systems (RTOS or bare-metal), working close to the hardware
  • Experience participating in HARA and software DFMEA
  • Experience with coding standards and their toolchains - MISRA and static analysis (e.g. Polyspace, Coverity, LDRA, Klocwork)
  • Understanding of electromechanical systems and how hardware changes affect software and vice-versa
  • Experience with wireless communication technologies in an embedded context (Wi-Fi, UWB, BLE, or similar RF)
  • Experience delivering safety-relevant software in a fast-moving, iterative environment
  • The seniority and credibility to push back constructively both against under-engineering and over-prescription.

Nice to have:
  • Positioning or state-estimation background - e.g. fiducial/marker tracking (QR, datamatrix, AprilTag, ArUco), dead-reckoning / encoder odometry, and multi-source cross-checking
  • Background in a safety-critical domain such as automotive AV/ADAS, aerospace/avionics, rail signaling, or consumer robotics (robot vacuums, drones, AR/VR)
  • Experience qualifying a compiler or tool for a safety context, or standing up a safety-relevant CI / static-analysis pipeline

A Final Note:
If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply - even if you don't check every box. At Mytra, we build bots, but we hire humans. We value thoughtful challengers who communicate with clarity and respect, and we're lifelong learners committed to getting better every day. We move fast, learn faster, and show up for each other under pressure. The best outcomes come from diverse perspectives working together to build something meaningful and built to last
Benefits Include:
  • Competitive compensation and equity grants at a high-growth company backed by top-tier VCs
  • Fully subsidized health coverage, including medical (baseline plans), dental, and vision for employees and dependents
  • 401(k) plans and employer-subsidized life insurance
  • Fully subsidized lunch and snacks at HQ-we eat and share stories together at the "long" table
  • Generous PTO and company-paid holidays, including one week over the winter break so everyone can recharge together
  • Voluntary pet insurance, Voluntary Life Insurance, Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity
  • Fully subsidized tax advisory services and education to help you understand your equity
  • Commuter benefits, including a up to $150 monthly commuter benefit
  • Lively, modern combined office and lab space where we rapidly iterate through design, build, and test phases
  • Fully equipped onsite gym and showers at headquarters

Pay Notice:
Compensation for this position will be set based on the candidate's experience level and location. The posted salary band is applicable only to the San Francisco Bay Area and is subject to change.
This role requires on-site presence at our Brisbane, CA headquarters, for close collaboration with the other teams.
The pay range for this role is:
220,000 - 230,000 USD per year (Mytra, Inc.)
