Job description

Passionate about precision medicine and advancing the healthcare industry?
Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time.
About our Teams:
At Tempus, products are owned and developed by small, autonomous teams composed of developers, designers, scientists, and product managers. You and your team set the goals, build the software, deploy the code, and contribute to a growing software platform that will make a lasting impact in the field of cancer research and treatment.
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Software Engineer to further our Genomics AI initiatives. This person should have experience and interest in leading analysis and design of technical problems, mentoring & coaching emerging talent during this transformative time in Tech. This position requires experience with programming (full stack), relational data systems and algorithms development. Top candidates will also have experience crafting code while leveraging AI tooling and embedding agentic workflows in their product.
Why We're Looking for You
  • You bring solid experience on software development teams, stepping beyond feature execution into leading technical analysis, design, and tradeoffs.
  • You excel at solving complex problems through data-driven, iterative software development in distributed, event-based architectures.
  • You possess a strong command of modern backend and frontend technologies and are excited to leverage AI-assisted development tools to move faster and build smarter.
  • You thrive in fast-paced, agile environments-helping coordinate cross-team collaboration, troubleshooting technical roadblocks, and documenting architecture.
  • You take pride in mentoring other engineers, elevating engineering standards, and continuously learning alongside a collaborative team.

Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end design, implementation, and delivery of core features in service of team and quarterly goals.
  • Integrate Generative AI tools and autonomous coding agents (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) into your workflow to accelerate feature development, streamline test generation, and rapidly prototype solutions.
  • Write clean, resilient code using enterprise design patterns that are flexible, performant, and adaptable to evolving business requirements.
  • Contribute to microservice and database architecture decisions, keeping scalability, caching strategies, and distributed performance top of mind.
  • Proactively identify technical dependencies, surface roadblocks early, and coordinate with product managers and other engineering teams.
  • Support junior team members through constructive code reviews, pair programming, and actionable coaching.

Technical Requirements
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience in an agile development environment.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, Node.js, and modern frontend frameworks like React.
  • Hands-on experience using GenAI coding tools and agents (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, LLM APIs) to assist in writing code, refactoring, writing unit/integration tests, and accelerating feature delivery.
  • Solid experience working with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and query optimization, as well as caching solutions (Redis).
  • Proven track record designing RESTful/GraphQL APIs and building within distributed or microservice architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (GCP or AWS) and CI/CD development pipelines.

Bonus Points
  • Experience building features that incorporate GenAI/LLM APIs into user-facing applications.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch/Opensearch
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Background in biotech, genomics, or precision medicine.

CHI: $85,000-$130,000
