Job description

Overview:
Job Title: AI Code Refactoring Engineer (Technical Debt Specialist)
Company: R2 Technologies
Location: Alpharetta, GA (Hybrid / Remote Options Available)
Employment Type: Full-Time / Contractual
About R2 Technologies: R2 Technologies is a Certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) headquartered in Alpharetta, GA. With over two decades of experience across global markets, we have built a reputation as a trusted partner for IT staffing excellence and cutting-edge digital product innovation. We are driven by innovation and operate on a simple philosophy: "We deliver what we promise, and we promise only what we can deliver." Beyond providing top-tier IT talent, R2 builds cutting-edge proprietary solutions like SmartEnt-an Enterprise AI & IoT Intelligence Platform utilizing advanced NLP and AI technologies. By partnering closely with our clients, we deliver technology-driven outcomes that are realistic, measurable, and impactful.
Job Summary: Manual refactoring of legacy code takes months; AI-driven refactoring takes days. R2 Technologies is looking for a specialized AI Code Refactoring Engineer to clean up the past. You will act as the "human-in-the-loop" expert, using enterprise-grade AI agents and coding assistants to untangle complex, aging codebases. Your goal is to eliminate technical debt, modernize syntax, and enforce rigorous security standards while ensuring that core business logic remains perfectly intact.
Key Responsibilities: * Run specialized AI agents (e.g., SWE-Agent, Claude Code) and coding assistants across legacy codebases to identify bottlenecks, dead code, and security vulnerabilities.
  • Prompt, guide, and validate LLMs to automatically rewrite complex conditionals, update deprecated libraries, and modernize syntax (e.g., upgrading older Java/C# to the latest standards).
  • Utilize AI tools to automatically generate comprehensive unit and integration tests that were missing from the original legacy codebase.
  • Rigorously review AI-generated refactors to ensure absolute functional parity with the original legacy systems.
  • Document legacy business rules by prompting LLMs to analyze and explain undocumented, decades-old code blocks.
  • Integrate modernized, clean code into modern CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment.

Qualifications: * Up to 3 years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on code refactoring, testing, and debugging.
  • Mastery of utilizing AI coding assistants (Cursor, GitHub Copilot) for repository-level code transformations.
  • Solid programming proficiency in modern languages (Java, C#, Python) and the ability to read and comprehend legacy code structures.
  • Deep understanding of software testing principles, test-driven development (TDD), and AI-generated test validation.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a passion for turning messy, undocumented code into clean, scalable architecture.
