About the Position: The Enterprise Architect II plays a key role in shaping the agency's technical direction by contributing to the design, modernization, and governance of enterprise level applications, platforms, and data systems. This position supports engineering teams by defining architectural patterns, improving legacy systems, guiding API and service design, and ensuring mission critical systems operate with high levels of reliability, performance, and clarity. This role is ideal for a technically strong individual who enjoys hands on architecture work, collaborating across teams, and helping drive forward looking system designs that strengthen the agency's technology landscape.Key responsibilities include:Software Engineering Leadership: • Design modular, maintainable software systems and guide language/framework selection for performance and reliability. • Assist in leading design reviews and API specification quality; promote best practices such as automated testing, clean code, versioning, and fault tolerance.Enterprise Architecture: • Develop solution architectures across multiple systems, platforms, and integrations; maintain architectural standards, reference architectures, design patterns, and technology roadmaps. • Align designs with enterprise strategy in partnership with development, SRE, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and data teams. • Evaluate new technologies and recommend adoption where beneficial.Application & Integration: • Design reliable APIs, messaging workflows, integration layers, and distributed system interactions. • Oversee interface contracts, versioning, scalability, and performance expectations throughout the lifecycle.Database & Data Platform Architecture: • Architect scalable, high performance data models, schemas, and database structures. • Develop strategies for replication, partitioning, caching, and storage in high volume or mission critical systems. • Define reliability requirements (durability, consistency, recovery) and ensure integrity, optimized queries, and resilient operations.Please note that this position is NOT REMOTE.
What you'll need to be Successful: This position requires strong technical depth, strategic thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively across diverse engineering and operations teams. Key qualities include: • Strong foundational knowledge in software engineering, application architecture, and data centric design. • Ability to design and clearly communicate complex architectures, patterns, system interactions, and modernization strategies. • Comfort collaborating with development, cybersecurity, and infrastructure teams to align decisions with enterprise strategy. • Skill in analyzing reliability, scalability, and performance for mission critical applications and data platforms. • Ability to evaluate emerging tools and technologies to make appropriate recommendations for updates to enterprise roadmaps. • Strong communication and documentation abilities. • A forward looking mindset with an interest in modernizing legacy systems and contributing to architecture governance across the agency.• Strong analytical skills with the ability to break down technical problems and communicate clearly. • Ability to manage multiple tasks, follow structured processes, and maintain organized documentation.
Preferred Qualifications: Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8-12+ years of multi-functional IT experience. Agency Preferred Qualifications:• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field is preferred. • Exposure to solution architecture, system design, or enterprise technology standards. • Experience creating technical documentation, diagrams, workflows, or process descriptions.
