Software Engineer Product Manager information

What is a software engineer product manager?

A Software Engineer Product Manager is a professional who combines technical expertise in software engineering with product management skills. They are responsible for bridging the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that software products are developed efficiently and meet user needs. Their role often includes defining product requirements, prioritizing features, collaborating with engineers, and overseeing the product lifecycle from concept to launch. This position requires strong communication, analytical, and organizational abilities, as well as a deep understanding of both technology and market trends.

How do software engineer product managers typically balance their technical responsibilities with product management duties?

Software Engineer Product Managers often juggle both the technical aspects of building software and the strategic responsibilities of guiding product development. This dual role requires strong time management, as you'll be involved in activities like sprint planning, feature prioritization, stakeholder meetings, and hands-on technical problem-solving. Collaboration is key, as you'll work closely with both engineering teams and business stakeholders to ensure alignment on goals and deliverables. Many professionals in this role find it helpful to dedicate specific blocks of time to engineering tasks versus product management activities, and to leverage agile methodologies to maintain clarity and focus. Successfully balancing these responsibilities can offer significant career growth, positioning you as a bridge between technical and business teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Product Manager, you need a solid background in software development, product lifecycle management, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Agile methodologies, wireframing software, and sometimes certifications such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) are highly beneficial. Excellent communication, collaboration, and strategic thinking are crucial soft skills that help bridge technical and business teams. These skills ensure the successful translation of business goals into technical solutions, fostering innovation and driving product success.

Job description

About Base
Base is America's next-generation power company. We're rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization-electricity-by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today's fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.
About the Role
We're looking for a product-minded engineer to lead development of the customer experience at Base.
Our apps help members understand their energy usage, manage outages, and track the performance of the battery powering their home. You will guide the architecture and technical direction of the interfaces that connect real-world energy systems with a clear, simple digital experience.
You'll join a small, high-impact team responsible for the digital front door of Base. In this role, you will lead development of major product surfaces across web and mobile, partner closely with product and design to shape the roadmap, and ensure we ship fast, reliable software.
This role requires strong product judgment, technical leadership, and the ability to translate complex systems into simple experiences that millions of households can rely on.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead development of the customer experience across Base web and mobile applications
  • Define and evolve frontend architecture that supports a fast, reliable, and scalable product platform
  • Own major product surfaces end-to-end, from initial concept through production and iteration
  • Work closely with backend engineers to design APIs and data models that support product features
  • Translate complex energy systems into clear, intuitive user experiences
  • Partner with product and design to shape the roadmap and deliver high-impact features
  • Establish engineering standards and improve developer experience across the frontend stack
  • Mentor engineers and raise the bar for product engineering across the team
  • Use analytics and experimentation to improve the member experience over time

What You'll Bring:
  • 2+ years of experience building production software in product or full-stack engineering roles
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as React or Next.js
  • Strong experience designing frontend architecture for complex web applications
  • Track record of owning products or platforms from concept through launch and iteration
  • Ability to work across the stack and collaborate closely with backend engineers on APIs and data models
  • Strong product judgment and the ability to translate complex systems into simple user experiences
  • Experience using product analytics, experimentation, and data to guide decisions
  • Technical depth in software engineering. You have gone deep on difficult problems
  • First principles thinking, grit, and a bias toward shipping

About the Team
America's power grid is failing-electricity costs have risen even as generation gets cheaper, and blackouts are becoming more common. We're building the software that fixes it. Our team owns the entire stack: firmware that controls batteries in thousands of homes, trading algorithms that buy and sell power in real-time markets, distributed commanding systems that orchestrate a growing fleet as a single grid asset, factory software for our Austin manufacturing line, and the product experience that makes it all invisible to homeowners. If you want to write code that physically moves electrons, ships hardware, and reshapes critical infrastructure, this is the job.
Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.
Our Values
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
  • Everyone's an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we're creating. We work in-person. It's not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.
  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
Do the best work of your life at Base.
