Job description

AI Native Staff Software Engineer

At Nubank, AI is not a bolt-on feature — it is existential to our next phase of growth. We are becoming an AI-native company, where intelligent systems don't just support our products; they define them.

As an AI Native Staff Software Engineer – Insurance, you will drive this transformation in our Insurance BU, which sits at the intersection of embedded insurance, Nu's most important customer surfaces, and our insurer partners.

You will be part of a lean, entrepreneurial team that delivers outsized business impact while protecting millions of customers, and is an early adopter of agentic engineering within Nubank.

This role combines high-impact technical leadership with hands-on building: you will design and operate production AI/agentic systems, set engineering standards, and help define what it means for Nubank to be truly AI-native.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Designing, building and managing agentic workflows that power end-to-end delivery of customer-facing insurance features and journeys.
  • Setting and evolving standards for AI development, promoting reusable agents, commands and context structures that other teams can safely build on.
  • Establishing evaluation and monitoring practices for AI outputs, ensuring quality, robustness and human-in-the-loop integrity where needed.
  • Owning production AI systems: optimizing models and pipelines for latency, cost and reliability at scale, and building evaluation frameworks and benchmarks to catch regressions.
  • Ensuring observability for AI systems in production (tracing, logging, alerting) and driving a culture of operational excellence around AI services.
  • Cutting through ambiguity, surfacing trade-offs and aligning cross-functional teams (Product, Data, Security, Compliance, Insurance partners) around clear outcomes.
  • Embedding responsible and auditable AI in everything you ship, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and internal risk standards.
  • Pioneering tooling, processes and culture that enable more Nubankers to safely contribute to AI-powered products over time (engineers and non-engineers).

We are looking for a person who has:

  • Proven technical leadership as a senior/staff engineer delivering high-impact, large-scale software systems in production.
  • AI-first mindset with professional experience implementing LLMs, generative AI, agentic patterns and/or RAG systems in real-world products.
  • Strong full-stack thinking: ability to design maintainable codebases and APIs that bridge model inference/orchestration layers with user-facing surfaces.
  • Experience navigating ambiguous, cross-functional projects that require coordination across multiple business units and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strategic acumen, linking technical AI initiatives to business drivers such as operational efficiency, risk, and customer acquisition or engagement.
  • Solid understanding of prompt engineering, tool calling, context management, and agent loops, and ability to contribute to shared agent libraries and commands (not only consume them).
  • Track record of mentoring and uplifting peers on AI-native workflows, prompt engineering, and production ML/AI patterns.
  • Experience in fintech or other regulated industries (e.g., financial services, insurance, payments) or similarly complex domains.
  • Advanced English for daily collaboration in a global environment.

Nice to have:

  • Background in insurance or embedded insurance products.
  • Experience scaling products across international markets and languages.
  • Familiarity with Portuguese and/or Spanish to read or review customer-facing copy (optional).
  • Prior experience in AI-first startups or big-tech environments with strong AI/ML teams.

Location for this opportunity:

  • Palo Alto, California (USA) OR Miami, Florida (USA) OR Toronto, Canada

Work Model for this Role:

  • Hybrid 2–3 times/week: Our hybrid work model brings us to the office at least twice a week, on strategic days designed to maximize team connection and collaboration.

Our Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation and company equity
  • Bi-annual trips to Brazil to build relationships with coworkers
  • Top-tier Medical Insurance
  • Top-tier Dental and Vision Insurance
  • Generous time off and company holidays
  • Life Insurance and AD&D
  • Extended maternity and paternity leaves
  • NuLanguage – our language learning program
  • NuCare – our mental health and wellness assistance program
  • 401(k) and saving plans (Health Saving Account and Flexible Spending Account, where applicable)

Specific benefits may vary slightly by country and will be detailed during the process.

Join us if you want to help define what an AI-native bank looks like in practice — building agentic systems that power real products for millions of customers across the Americas.
