What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer in Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in Test, you need a solid background in computer science, strong programming skills (often in Java, Python, or similar languages), and experience with automated testing frameworks. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, and CI/CD systems, as well as knowledge of test management platforms, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are critical soft skills that help you design effective test cases and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure that software products are reliable, scalable, and meet quality standards before release.

What are some common challenges faced by Software Engineers In Test when collaborating with development teams?

Software Engineers In Test (SETs) often face the challenge of ensuring their testing processes keep pace with rapid development cycles. Coordinating closely with developers is essential to identify potential issues early and to align on testing priorities. Communication gaps can sometimes lead to misunderstandings about requirements or missed edge cases, so proactive collaboration is key. Additionally, SETs may need to advocate for sufficient time for thorough test automation, balancing quality with project deadlines.

What is a Software Engineer In Test?

A Software Engineer In Test (SET) is a professional who specializes in developing and maintaining automated tests and testing frameworks to ensure software quality. Unlike traditional testers, SETs are skilled in programming and work closely with development teams to design testable software, automate repetitive testing tasks, and identify bugs early in the development cycle. Their main goal is to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and coverage of software testing processes, often contributing to both code quality and faster release cycles.

What is the difference between Software Engineer In Test vs QA Engineer?

Job description

Software Engineer

Hobart, WI | Full-Time | 1st Shift Flexible Hours

At EMT International, we design and build cutting-edge finishing equipment for the digital print, inkjet, and label industries. Unlike many manufacturers, everything from engineering and machining to assembly and testing happens in-house. That means our engineers don’t just write code — they see their ideas come to life on real machines used around the world.

If you enjoy hands-on problem solving, motion control, automation, and working closely with manufacturing teams, this is an opportunity to build software that directly impacts high-tech industrial equipment.

Important Position Requirements
  • This position is located in Hobart, WI
  • Candidates must be willing to travel as needed to support equipment installation, testing, and customer support activities
  • Candidates must currently be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position
What You’ll Do
  • Develop and maintain software for motion control systems and HMI applications
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Write clean, testable, and maintainable code
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and service teams to develop innovative machine solutions
  • Test, validate, and troubleshoot new software and machine functionality
  • Create documentation including user manuals, troubleshooting guides, and theory of operation documents
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and engineering change processes
  • Help bring custom and standard OEM equipment to life through automation and controls software
What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is curious, collaborative, and excited to work on real-world automation systems.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years of software development experience preferred
  • Experience or coursework in:
    • PLC programming
    • Motion control systems
    • Object-oriented programming
    • Industrial automation
  • Familiarity with:
    • IEC 61131-3 / Structured Text
    • Java or C++
    • Software debugging and testing
    • Source control and software development best practices
  • B&R Automation Studio experience is a plus
Why EMT International?
  • See your software control real machines built in-house
  • Collaborate directly with machinists, assemblers, electrical engineers, and service technicians
  • Be part of a growing engineering-driven manufacturing company
  • Gain exposure to automation, motion control, machine design, and industrial software systems
  • Flexible first shift schedule
What Makes This Role Different

At EMT, engineers are closely connected to the manufacturing floor. You’ll have the opportunity to troubleshoot equipment, test your code directly on machines, and work side-by-side with the teams building and supporting the equipment. This creates a fast-paced, hands-on environment where your work has immediate impact.

Ready to Build Something Real?

If you’re passionate about software engineering, automation, and solving complex technical challenges, we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re an experienced engineer or a student looking to launch your career in industrial software development, EMT International offers an opportunity to grow and make an impact.
