To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

What are software engineer contracts?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

Job description

Company Overview
Docusign brings agreements to life. Over 1.5 million customers and more than a billion people in over 180 countries use Docusign solutions to accelerate the process of doing business and simplify people's lives. With intelligent agreement management, Docusign unleashes business-critical data that is trapped inside of documents. Until now, these were disconnected from business systems of record, costing businesses time, money, and opportunity. Using Docusign's Intelligent Agreement Management platform, companies can create, commit, and manage agreements with solutions created by the #1 company in e-signature and contract lifecycle management (CLM).
What you'll do
Microservices Framework (MSF) team within the Docusign Cloud Engineering organization helps build the platform that powers Product Development across a multi-cloud environment. MSF team enables microservices at scale through two core capabilities, Compute for containerized service execution and Storage for all services, while delivering end-to-end automation for provisioning and deployment. You'll shape the Cloud Layer by defining cloud component configurations across providers, automating deployments, creating secure execution environments, managing users and permissions, and streamlining standardized onboarding. This team also owns the System Layer capabilities including system execution, data flow and routing, security and encryption, and reliable service-to-UI and service-to-service communication. If you thrive on solving complex distributed systems challenges, elevating developer experience, and making an outsized impact on reliability and scale, we'd love to hear from you.
Docusign is looking for a seasoned software engineer to join our microservices framework team focused on building highly scalable, available, and reliable distributed systems. The Cloud engineering at Docusign ensures critical back-end services scale with the company's continued rapid growth.
This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Director, Engineering.
Responsibility
  • Be open minded, forward thinking and passionate about great software platform and cloud technologies
  • Think about how to solve problems in scale and build automation to manage complex software systems
  • Develop testable, high-quality, and ship-ready code with ample test coverage
  • Work with Product Management and other developers to understand and translate engineering requirements into design requirements and provide estimates for development
  • Work as part of a cross-site development team to drive design, implementation, testing and release of microservices platform
  • Architect and evolve the Microservices Framework (MSF) platform across multiple cloud providers, defining reference architectures, guardrails, and best practices for containerized microservices and storage platforms
  • Lead design and implementation of the compute runtime (e.g., container orchestration, scheduling, autoscaling) and underlying networking to deliver highly reliable, low-latency service execution
  • Design and integrate storage solutions (databases, object stores, queues/streams) with clear patterns for replication, backup/restore, data routing, governance, and encryption in transit/at rest
  • Build and maintain end-to-end automation for provisioning and deployments using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines
  • Mentor and coach engineers, perform design and code reviews, and lead cross-team initiatives that raise the technical bar and platform reliability
