What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

Job description

About the Role

We are hiring a Senior C++ Software Engineer to join our growing Endpoint State and Control team, focused on defining and enforcing endpoint behavior across a managed environment. We build the foundational controls that let IT teams define, enforce, and maintain a strong security posture across every endpoint they manage. Trusted by over 40,000 customers globally, your work will directly power the tools IT teams and MSPs (managed service providers) rely on to monitor, manage, and secure endpoints at scale.

You will collaborate in a fast-paced, agile environment that emphasizes rapid iteration and customer-driven outcomes, working alongside other Software Engineers, Product Designers, and Product Managers. You are responsible for implementing design patterns and working on enterprise level software challenges, in a startup environment. Enabling firsthand product impact, while building software of scale that runs on millions and millions of endpoints.

If you are a Senior Software Engineer, with application-level C++ expertise, who thrives on solving complex technical challenges and is passionate about building high-quality, reliable software for real-world impact, this is the role for you!

What You’ll be Doing

  • C++ Software Development: design and implement scalable features, enhance platform performance, and support critical functionality across our core product suite. Use your expertise to contribute to the development of large-scale software applications.
  • Committing Code and Shipping Products: be one of our most trusted engineers committing code.
  • Other Duties as needed

About You

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of C++ development experience, with proficiency in C++ 14 or newer
  • 5+ years of Windows systems-level C++ engineering
  • Strong familiarity with windows kernel drivers
  • Experience designing or maintaining a Windows kernel-mode driver or

service that runs on production endpoints

  • Comfortable designing from first principles, this is a net-new system

with no existing internal architecture to inherit

  • Drive technical design: write architecture documents, define

subsystem contracts, work cross-functionally with server and UI engineers

  • Comfortable working on problems with sparse documentation and

undefined requirements

  • Comfortable experimenting with AI tools in development workflow

PREFERRED:

  • WHQL driver certification experience (strongly preferred)
  • Driver development background (minifilter, WFP)
  • macOS systems experience: Apple Endpoint Security framework
  • Linux systems experience: eBPF or kernel module development
