What is software development?

Software development is the process of designing, creating, testing, and maintaining computer programs or applications. It involves a range of tasks including writing code, debugging, and collaborating with other team members to solve problems and deliver functional software solutions. Software development can encompass everything from mobile apps and websites to large-scale enterprise systems. Developers use various programming languages and tools depending on the project requirements.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on collaborative projects, and how can these be addressed?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, managing merge conflicts, and ensuring consistent communication across the team during collaborative projects. To address these issues, teams typically use version control systems like Git, establish clear coding standards, and hold regular stand-up meetings to keep everyone aligned. Additionally, utilizing code review processes and project management tools helps maintain quality and transparency, making collaboration smoother and more efficient.

What is the difference between Software Development vs Software Engineering?

AspectSoftware DevelopmentSoftware Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer science or related field, coding certificationsSimilar credentials, often includes certifications in software engineering principles
Work EnvironmentDeveloping, coding, and testing software applicationsDesigning, analyzing, and managing software projects and systems
Industry UsageCommonly used in tech companies, startups, and software firmsUsed in larger organizations, focusing on system architecture and process
Search & Comparison IntentFocuses on coding and application creationEmphasizes system design and engineering principles

While both roles involve software creation, Software Development primarily focuses on coding and building applications, whereas Software Engineering encompasses designing, analyzing, and managing complex software systems with a broader engineering perspective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes certifications in cloud platforms or specific frameworks are often required. Collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for working in diverse development teams and navigating project requirements. These skills and qualities ensure efficient code development, seamless teamwork, and successful delivery of robust software solutions.

Job description

Full-Stack Developer(Legacy Maintenance & Transition Specialist)

Location: Batesville, Arkansas (Hybrid / On-site flexibility preferred)

Job Type: Full-Time

Experience Level: Mid-to-Senior (3–5+ years of relevant experience, with 5+ years of programming experience preferred)

About the Role

FutureFuel Chemical Company (FFCC) is seeking a self-directed, security-focused Full-Stack Web Application Developer. While this is a hands-on software development role rather than a people-management position, it requires strong, proven project management skills. Because you will be working independently a majority of the time, your ability to organize, prioritize, and self-direct the migration strategy is critical to our success.

Your workload will be split between supporting our legacy web architecture (Classic ASP.NET, VBScript, JavaScript, IIS, and SQL Server) and building out the new platform using React.JS/.NET with a MySQL backend. The ideal candidate possesses a strong software development lifecycle background, thinks systematically, and excels at driving projects from conception to completion under minimal supervision.

Core ResponsibilitiesProject Management & Execution

Workload Prioritization: Apply strong working knowledge of project management and time management techniques to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple workloads with minimal supervision.

Milestone Tracking: Break down the overarching migration goal into clear technical milestones, self-directing your daily tasks to meet deadlines under pressure.

Lifecycle Management: Manage the full software development lifecycle of the transition, proactively identifying technical dependencies, resource constraints, and deployment risks.

Documentation & Reporting: Maintain necessary project plans and thorough documentation of all system/application builds. Provide concise weekly status reports focused entirely on completed technical results.

Legacy Maintenance & Optimization

System Maintenance: Directly troubleshoot, debug, and optimize existing web application components built on Classic ASP.NET, VBScript, JavaScript, and IIS.

Database Programming: Write and optimize complex Transact-SQL (T-SQL) queries, manage stored procedures, and handle data modifications within our legacy SQL Server databases.

XML Data Processing: Perform advanced application troubleshooting involving XML schemas, data extraction, transformation, and database integration.

Performance Tuning: Monitor systems proactively for capacity constraints, perform data dictionary maintenance, and execute database performance analysis to maximize system availability.

Greenfield Development & Migration Implementation

Hands-on Migration: Re-code and transition legacy web logic over to a modern frontend using React and a structured MySQL backend.

Application & Database Implementation: Build user interfaces, design schemas, and implement optimized queries for the new application platform.

Security Integration: Build security directly into the code by employing "least privilege" access design principles across all database structures and application layers.

Disaster Readiness: Maintain the integrity, security, and availability of backup data during the transition lifecycle.

Team Operations & Department Expectations

Department Collaboration: Work closely with infrastructure, server, network, and database teams to resolve complex deployment issues and production bugs.

Helpdesk Support: Help manage team workload by occasionally pitching in to resolve tasks within the IT Helpdesk backlog.

Company Compliance: Follow all FFCC safety rules and complete required organizational safety training on time.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Project Management Expertise: Demonstrated ability to accept high-level assignments, self-start, and execute complex technical migrations with limited supervision and guidance.

Experience: 3 to 5+ years of full-stack web application development experience, with a solid grasp of the full software development lifecycle.

Legacy Proficiency: Applied programming skills in Classic ASP/.NET, VBScript, vanilla JavaScript, HTML, and IIS configuration.

Modern Stack Expertise: Practical experience designing, creating, and administering database web applications using MySQL. Strong proficiencies in building interactive user interfaces with React.

Database Foundations: Deep understanding of data modeling, database design, indexing strategies, and expert-level competency writing complex SQL queries.

Security Focus: Practical understanding of web security administration (user permissions, auditing, security metrics) and experience staying updated on modern security vulnerabilities.

Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with both novice business users and technical staff.

Preferred / Desirable Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics preferred (an Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered).

Legacy Data Skills: Experience with Microsoft SQL Server development (T-SQL), SQL-XML programming, SSIS, and SSRS.

Utility Tools: Familiarity with data modeling tools (e.g., ERWin), file comparison utilities (e.g., WinMerge), or PHP.

Infrastructure Awareness: Broad knowledge of Active Directory, basic network protocols (TCP/IP, VLANs), and server environment fundamentals to act as a backup systems admin if needed.
