Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.
Experience
  • 9+ years of related experience, or 8+ years with a Master's degree, or 5+ years with a Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated experience leading software development efforts through all phases of technology and product development.
  • Extensive experience with medical device software development and applicable regulatory and design control requirements.
  • Proven experience transitioning algorithms and research concepts into production-ready solutions.
Skills and Competencies
  • Expertise in architecting real-time software solutions and algorithms for production systems.
  • Strong experience developing, refining, and implementing algorithms.
  • Experience developing machine learning models and supporting algorithm-based products.
  • Strong mathematical and statistical foundation, including linear algebra and statistics.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, software requirements, verification, validation, and risk management.
  • Experience with software development tools and methodologies, including:

Responsibilities
The Principal Software Engineer will provide technical leadership for technology and product development initiatives, leading all aspects of the software development lifecycle and serving as a key contributor to the technical success of assigned programs.
This individual will establish software development strategy and planning while ensuring compliance with internal procedures, medical device design controls, regulatory requirements, and applicable industry standards.
The Principal Software Engineer will lead or oversee concept development, prototyping, feasibility studies, software architecture, design inputs, design assessment, reliability activities, verification planning, risk management, and design verification testing.
The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional core team members, project management, R&D leadership, extended engineering teams, and external development partners. The Principal Software Engineer will drive technical and design trade-off decisions while considering product requirements, technical risk, cost, reliability, and user needs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership for product development and technology development programs.
  • Exercise broad technical judgment when defining approaches to complex or varied engineering challenges.
  • Develop, refine, analyze, and implement algorithms supporting advanced medical device solutions.
  • Establish pathways for transitioning research-stage algorithms and technologies into production systems.
  • Lead software architecture, development strategy, implementation, verification, and technical decision-making.
  • Develop or oversee software requirements and associated verification activities to ensure the product meets defined requirements.
  • Manage or oversee software development and testing resources while ensuring deliverables meet quality, regulatory, and technical expectations.
  • Collaborate with project management to develop technical schedules, monitor progress, identify risks, and communicate project status to project teams and R&D leadership.
  • Maintain regular communication with R&D leadership regarding technical progress, priorities, risks, and project needs.
  • Lead or contribute to key product development deliverables, including:
    • Design inputs
    • Software architecture
    • Detailed software design
    • Ideation, prototyping, and feasibility testing
    • Technical risk mitigation
    • Verification and validation
    • Design reviews
    • Phase-specific readiness reviews
    • Regulatory and standards compliance
  • Utilize modern software development and quality tools, including Azure DevOps, Git, static code analysis, software composition analysis, dynamic code analysis, and unit testing frameworks.
  • Ensure data used for software testing and algorithm training is representative, accurate, traceable, and compliant with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Proactively identify technical risks and lead risk-reduction activities and contingency planning.
  • Support product reliability, risk management, verification, and validation activities throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Lead technical trade-off discussions while balancing performance, cost, technical risk, reliability, regulatory requirements, and user needs.
  • Provide technical mentorship and problem-solving guidance to engineers and other development team members.
