Summary of Job
The Summer Intern applies civil engineering practices and principles in the design and inspection of projects, works with other Village departments, regulatory agencies and the public. Specifically, this position assists the Village Engineering Department with engineering-related services associated with private development and Village construction projects including but not limited to, administering permits, compliance with regulatory agency requirements, design and inspection of public works projects, mapping and recordkeeping, and all other engineering-related services as directed by the Village Engineer.
This position typically begins the first Tuesday immediately following Memorial Day weekend, and ends the last Friday immediately before Labor Day, unless otherwise agreed upon with the Village Engineer.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides assistance to the Village Engineer and Engineering Technician with field surveys and preparation of base maps for existing and proposed DPW projects.
  • Completes miscellaneous office work scanning and organizing legacy files.
  • Updates GIS with record drawings for water utility, sanitary sewer utility and storm water management facilities including ponds.
  • Performs surveying construction layout of DPW Projects and assists with assigned design elements of DPW projects;
  • Inspects and closes out permits issued by the Engineering Department
  • Assists with the issuance and oversite of Village permits, including inspection of completed projects when needed; coordinates with property owners, utility companies and contractors to track permit status
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual mileage map and report based on GIS.
  • Coordinates street and utility work with private utilities, the WI Department of Natural Resources and Village staff and residents.
  • Inspects public works construction projects to ensure work is completed according to the specifications and plans. Coordinates work with contractors, maintains contact with residents, coordinates testing, field measures the completed work, reviews and recommends change orders. May be required to work late and or after hours.
  • Receives and attempts to resolve complaints and problems from residents related to Village projects,
  • Helps with inspection of DPW projects
  • Helps with driveway permits & inspection.
  • Provides assistance with WDNR storm water permit illicit discharge detection & elimination, education & outreach, annual reports, and watershed-based permit development;
  • Supports engineering staff with completion of biennial PASER reports; utility and work in right-of-way permits & inspection;
  • Helps prepare digital record drawings;
  • Assists with sanitary & water system maps;
  • Helps with development plan reviews;
  • Maintains time reports;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university or technical college civil engineering or related programs including surveying, CADD design and mapping or civil design.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License or ability to obtain one required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software including Word, Powerpoint and Excel.

  • The employee must exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work in an office environment for 3-5 hours per day sitting, and 3-5 hours per day is spent in the field on construction sites standing for an extended period of time, and/or working near live traffic. Surveying at sites requires a great deal of walking and the ability to carry equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as repetitive computer keyboard use, irate individuals and intimidation may cause discomfort and poses limited risk of injury. Must have ability to spend part of each day in the field where work is dusty, noisy, and hazardous, alongside heavy equipment and/or live traffic. Work may be performed in all weather conditions.
  • The hours of this position are generally Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm, but this position may require some evening and weekend inspection work. About half of the work activities are performed in an office setting (3-5 hours/day), typically at a computer. The other half is spent outdoors at construction sites, occasionally performing mapping operations within road right of ways.
  • The office work environment has a low noise level, while the field work often includes loud noises, dust, chemicals and machinery. This position requires the ability to multi-task.
  • Closed toe boots will be required on all job sites.
