Job description

Ring VSG team is looking for a Software Development Engineer (SDE) who will serve as the architectural backbone across our two sub-teams (ATX and NEXT), defining system designs, establishing technical patterns, and providing hands-on guidance that keeps both teams aligned and moving fast. You are curious, creative, goal-oriented, and excited to support team members with a strong sense of customer obsession. You take ownership of your work and are passionate about software quality, consistency, maintainability, performance, and security.
Key job responsibilities
- Define and own the overarching technical architecture spanning both ATX and NEXT sub-teams, ensuring consistent design patterns, shared service contracts, and coherent platform evolution
- Lead cross-team technical designs and architecture decisions for the Video Monitoring platform, producing design documents, API specifications, and system diagrams that guide implementation across both teams
- Provide day-to-day architectural guidance and design reviews to engineers on both sub-teams, unblocking technical decisions and ensuring solutions meet scalability, reliability, and security requirements
- Design, implement, and maintain mission-critical services powering Video Monitoring's event processing and agent investigation workflows with sub-two-second response times
- Own long-term technical direction for VM platform evolution from human-centered monitoring to AI-agent based automated detection while maintaining human oversight
- Mentor SDEs and serve as technical lead, raising organizational awareness and team productivity through GenAI technologies
- Collaborate with Product Management, GTM stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to translate ambiguous customer requirements into concrete technical solutions and architectural blueprints
- Maintain eight production services ensuring audit trail compliance, distributed service communication, and EventStream business intelligence integration
- Drive strategic initiatives and set project timelines for critical VM capabilities, unblocking teams and external partners
- Identify and address systemic technical issues limiting scalability and time-to-market through GenAI adoption and evangelization
- Contribute to continuous improvement of development practices across VM and Ring Core service teams
A day in the life
You'll start by reviewing overnight alerts and system metrics, then shift into architecture work - drafting designs that span both ATX and NEXT, reviewing RFCs, and ensuring cross-team technical consistency

Your morning includes design reviews where you guide engineers through trade-offs and mentoring on AI video monitoring solutions. Afternoons bring collaboration with Product teams to transform customer needs into architectural blueprints, debugging mission-critical services, and conducting impactful code reviews. You'll wrap up by setting technical direction, unblocking key initiatives across both sub-teams, and prototyping next-generation AI automation that pushes the boundaries of real-time threat detection while maintaining the reliability and security standards that make neighborhoods safer.
About the team
The Home and Neighborhood Monitoring team powers Ring's premium Virtual Security Guard service, delivering AI-powered threat detection with human oversight to millions of homes

We build mission-critical services across two specialized sub-teams: Agent Tool Experience (ATX) and Neighbor Experience (NEXT). This role sits across both teams, providing the architectural vision and design leadership that keeps our platform cohesive as each team tackles distinct problem domains. Our collaborative environment emphasizes mentorship and knowledge sharing as we maintain 14+ microservices with tier-1 reliability.

We focus on pioneering the evolution from human-centered monitoring to AI-agent based detection while pushing the boundaries of real-time neighborhood safety through continuous innovation.
