What is a Software Development Engineer Internship?

A Software Development Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in software engineering. Interns typically work on real-world projects alongside experienced engineers, learning how to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications. These internships help individuals build technical skills, gain industry knowledge, and often serve as a pathway to full-time roles after graduation.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Software Development Engineer Internship?

As a Software Development Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects that contribute to your team's goals, such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or improving existing systems. You may be assigned to collaborate with full-time engineers on coding tasks, code reviews, or testing processes. Interns often participate in sprint planning meetings and are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and seek feedback. This hands-on experience helps you build technical skills, gain exposure to the software development lifecycle, and understand how engineering teams collaborate in a professional setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by ongoing computer science coursework. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and issue tracking tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help interns stand out and integrate smoothly into development teams. These abilities are crucial for quickly learning on the job, contributing to projects, and collaborating effectively in a fast-paced tech environment.

This position mainly involves full-stack engineering, with chances to work on AI-driven features, such as conversational AI and intelligent agents.
As a P30 engineer, you will own features end-to-end, contribute to system building, and help drive engineering excellence while demonstrating modern tools-including AI-to accelerate development and innovation.
What You'll Do
  • Build, develop, and deliver full-stack features across frontend, backend, and service layers
  • Own end-to-end delivery of complex features, from building through implementation, testing, and release
  • Contribute to system architecture and technical development, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance
  • Develop and sustain APIs, services, and user-facing experiences within Workfront
  • Apply AI technologies (e.g., conversational AI, AI agents) to improve product capabilities where appropriate
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve efficiency, code quality, and speed of delivery
  • Collaborate with Product, Build, and cross-functional teams to deliver customer-focused solutions
  • Debug and resolve issues across multiple layers of the stack and distributed systems

  • Innovation: Drives measurable improvements and feature innovation, including thoughtful application of AI capabilities
  • Ownership: Works independently with minimal mentorship and delivers complex, high-impact work
  • Technical Contribution: Contributes to architecture, build, and engineering decisions aligned with business needs

Technical Expectations
  • Strong experience in full-stack development (frontend, backend, APIs, and services)
  • Ability to work across multiple systems and domains, understanding dependencies and trade-offs
  • Experience debugging and resolving complex, cross-system issues
  • Ownership of test planning, release quality, and system reliability
  • Familiarity with or interest in AI/ML, conversational AI, or agent-based systems
  • Demonstrated ability to bring to bear AI tools to accelerate development workflows
  • Applies build patterns, performance optimization, and secure coding practices

Collaboration & Leadership
  • Shares knowledge and mentors junior engineers
  • Collaborates across teams and contributes to technical initiatives and build discussions
  • Positively influences team culture through teamwork, accountability, and strong execution
  • Participates in hiring and helps raise the engineering bar
  • Communicates clearly to align collaborators on technical decisions and trade-offs

What You Need to Succeed
  • Typically 3-8 years of software engineering experience
  • Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system building
  • Demonstrated capability to provide full-stack features in live settings
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams on customer-facing products
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies, including tools powered by artificial intelligence

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Node.js, Java, TypeScript, and React
  • Familiarity with cloud-native and DevOps technologies, including Kubernetes and ArgoCD
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog
  • Exposure to conversational AI or AI-assisted user experiences

Why This Role Matters
As a P30 engineer, you will be essential in delivering valuable product features and assisting the team in adopting current development methods, including the smart application of AI. Your efforts will support core product functions and the advancement of AI-powered experiences in Workfront.
