What does a software development engineer intern do?

A Software Development Engineer Intern assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns typically work on real projects, write code, debug issues, and collaborate with team members to learn the software development lifecycle. This role helps interns gain practical experience, improve programming skills, and understand how software teams operate in a professional environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, you typically need proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or version control systems is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects while growing their technical and teamwork abilities in a real-world environment.

What types of projects do software development engineer interns typically work on, and how much ownership do they have over their work?

Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, weโ€™re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain โ€” and weโ€™re looking for talented people who want to help.

Youโ€™ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. Youโ€™ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And youโ€™ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

The Service Transformation and Deployment Automation team aims to remove all manual touchpoints from service operations within Amazon Web Services (AWS) Networking, one of the worldโ€™s largest and most complex networks. Software Development Engineers are instrumental in discovering innovative ways to automate and scale services. They drive stability, consistency, and sustainability of the network while never losing sight of the high security bar our customerโ€™s demand. We own a container compute platform in the border network, network device access and locality software, and a business intelligence platform for providing insights into service maturity. This position is located in Minneapolis, USA and working in the heart of AWS global network.

Millions of customers rely on Amazonโ€™s network for using our retail websites, accessing content on their Kindles, and building applications and businesses on top of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. Our goal is to become The Infrastructure Platform for the world โ€“ achieving this goal requires automated and massively scalable software services. Success depends on our world-class network infrastructure, and our network depends on our automation.

This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We donโ€™t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we donโ€™t get paged for the same issue twice.

Our team is dedicated to supporting new team members. Our team has a broad mix of experience levels and Amazon tenures, and weโ€™re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior engineers truly enjoy mentoring more junior engineers and engineers from non-traditional backgrounds through oneโ€‘onโ€‘one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth. We try to assign projects and tasks based on what will help each team member develop into a betterโ€‘rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Key job responsibilities

You will be responsible for the design, implementation and quality of services you deliver. Your experience working in software development or in an enterprise environment will help us implement automated solutions across a variety of applications and systems.

  • Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.
  • Write high quality distributed system software.
  • Work in an agile, startupโ€‘like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff.
  • Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth rollโ€‘out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
  • Use data to measure success and take responsibility for the quality of your service and, regardless of their source, strive to prevent faults from impacting your customers.
  • Use your strong problemโ€‘solving skills, ability to understand and scope solutions, work across teams to drive solutions.
  • Contribute to documentation of process and procedures.
  • Learn from others and help grow those in your team to achieve their best.
  • Take ownership, consider tradeoffs and lean on your expertise to ensure the job gets done.
  • Participate in an onโ€‘call rotation with your team.
A day in the life

Engineers in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range of responsibilities; we work with internal partners to develop and implement the nextโ€‘generation platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blueprint allowing our engineers to develop solutions to complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact to our customers during events.

  • Work in a 24x7 team onโ€‘call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.
  • Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
  • Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
  • Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
About the team
