Software Development Engineer Intern information

What does a software development engineer intern do?

A Software Development Engineer Intern assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns typically work on real projects, write code, debug issues, and collaborate with team members to learn the software development lifecycle. This role helps interns gain practical experience, improve programming skills, and understand how software teams operate in a professional environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer Intern, you typically need proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or version control systems is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects while growing their technical and teamwork abilities in a real-world environment.

What types of projects do software development engineer interns typically work on, and how much ownership do they have over their work?

As a Software Development Engineer Intern, you will often contribute to real-world projects that may range from feature development and bug fixes to prototyping new tools or improving existing systems. Interns are usually paired with a mentor and integrated into agile teams, where they are encouraged to take ownership of their assigned tasks and present their solutions. While guidance and code reviews are standard, interns are trusted to design, implement, and test their code, allowing for meaningful hands-on experience and a direct impact on product outcomes.

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)

Sharetec

Fort Wayne, IN • On-site

Job description

Description:

Sharetec is looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our team!

At Sharetec, we believe in a people-first business. Our mission is to make millions of people’s lives easier by developing innovative core banking and lending software solutions for credit unions and their members. Our customers rely on us for powerful financial technology that enhances operations across accounting, lending, member services, and online banking — and they count on us to be a caring, trusted partner in their success.

The Role

We’re looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to build and own the test automation infrastructure that powers our engineering team’s ability to ship quality software with confidence. This is a builder role — not a role for someone who maintains inherited frameworks or adds tests to existing suites.

You’ll design automation frameworks from the ground up, integrate them into our CI/CD pipelines, serve as the engineering team’s subject matter expert on test automation tooling and practices, and help raise the quality bar across the organization. Sharetec’s core platform is a long-lived .NET system, and experience testing production-grade legacy applications is essential.

If you’re someone who takes pride in building things that last, cares deeply about quality as a team sport, and gets energized by the challenge of testing complex, high-stakes financial software, this role may be for you.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt position. Candidates may work remotely from anywhere in the United States, with the exception of California. The starting salary range for this position is $110,000 – $120,000 based on experience, plus bonus eligibility.

Who Will Love This Job

  • Someone who finds more satisfaction in making something better than building something new — and understands why that’s harder
  • Someone who believes that technology serving people’s financial lives is worth doing with real care and precision
  • Someone who is energized by a company in motion — where the roadmap is growing and your contributions shape the direction
  • Someone who is as comfortable presenting to an engineering team as they are rolling up their sleeves to solve a hard infrastructure problem
  • Someone who builds automation frameworks from first principles and takes ownership of the architecture decisions that follow
  • Someone who sees quality as a team responsibility — not a gate at the end of the process
  • Someone who is energized by complex, long-lived systems and the unique testing challenges they bring
  • Someone who wants to leave the codebase more testable than they found it

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Test Automation Architecture & Ownership

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks from scratch — not inherited or extended from existing suites
  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert on test automation tools, techniques, and best practices across the engineering organization
  • Establish architecture, folder structure, conventions, and shared patterns for the automation codebase
  • Maintain test suites for reliability and maintainability as the platform evolves

CI/CD Integration & Quality Infrastructure

  • Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or equivalent) to support continuous delivery
  • Design pipeline triggers, handle test parallelism and flakiness, and own reporting and alerting within the pipeline
  • Identify gaps in current testing infrastructure and proactively propose and implement improvements
  • Partner with DevOps and Engineering to ensure test execution environments are reliable and representative

Cross-Functional Partnership & Quality Advocacy

  • Partner with product managers and developers to integrate automation early in the SDLC, promoting a shift-left quality mindset
  • Influence team QA practices through documentation, mentorship, and standards-setting — not just personal execution
  • Review pull requests for testability and advocate for design choices that improve coverage and maintainability

Continuous Improvement & Industry Awareness

  • Stay current on emerging testing tools, frameworks, and industry trends
  • Evaluate and advocate for adoption of new tools and approaches where they improve quality outcomes

Qualified Candidates Should Have

Required

  • 5+ years of professional software testing or SDET experience
  • Demonstrable experience building test automation frameworks from scratch — not just using or maintaining inherited ones
  • Hands-on Playwright experience in a production-grade project
  • Python proficiency demonstrated through professional or open-source work
  • API testing ownership using Postman or equivalent — including contract testing, data-driven tests, and CI integration
  • CI/CD pipeline ownership — built or significantly extended a pipeline using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or equivalent
  • Experience testing .NET / C# applications in a production environment
  • Experience with long-lived production platforms — not just greenfield or short-term contract work

Preferred

  • Experience in fintech, financial services, or SaaS B2B software
  • Familiarity with performance or load testing tools such as JMeter or k6
  • Experience with cloud-based or containerized test execution environments
  • Exposure to security testing concepts and practices
  • Early leadership signals — mentoring peers, defining QA standards, or influencing team practices
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
