Software Development Business Analyst information

What does a software development business analyst do?

A Software Development Business Analyst acts as a bridge between business stakeholders and software development teams. They gather and analyze requirements, document business processes, and translate business needs into technical specifications. Their main goal is to ensure the final software product aligns with the organization's objectives and user needs. This involves facilitating communication, prioritizing requirements, and often assisting in testing and implementation phases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development business analyst?

To thrive as a Software Development Business Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, and typically a degree in computer science, information systems, or business. Familiarity with requirements management tools (like Jira or Confluence), modeling languages (such as UML), and Agile or Scrum certifications are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities ensure that business needs are clearly translated into actionable technical requirements, leading to successful project outcomes.

How does a software development business analyst typically collaborate with developers and stakeholders during a project lifecycle?

A Software Development Business Analyst acts as a crucial bridge between stakeholders, such as product owners or clients, and the development team. Throughout the project lifecycle, they gather and clarify requirements, translate business needs into technical documentation, and facilitate communication to ensure everyone is aligned. They often participate in agile ceremonies like sprint planning and stand-ups, help resolve ambiguities, and validate that the delivered software meets the intended business goals. This collaborative approach helps reduce misunderstandings and ensures smoother project execution.

Our Commercial and IT group is currently looking to add a contract Business Analyst, based in Calgary, AB

Reporting to the Director, Commercial and IT, we are seeking a dedicated professional with knowledge and experience redesigning procure-to-pay (P2P) processes and building financial reporting within an ERP environment.  We need someone with the proven competencies and capacity to own the end to end procure-to-pay (P2P) process (from requisition through PO, receipt, invoice, approval and payment) and for the financial reporting that sits on top of it.  This role will support the Eclipse P2P redesign and reporting build-out.

Please Note: this is a contract position for a term of 6-months to start.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Own the procure-to-pay (P2P) process end to end (requisition, PO, receiving, three-way match, AP invoice entry and payment) as the business-side process owner across Finance, Supply Chain and Operations
  • Map current-state P2P, identify breakpoints such as off-PO spend, coding errors and approval bottlenecks, and redesign target-state workflow and controls in Eclipse
  • Build and maintain financial reporting in Power BI, including job cost, committed cost, WIP, margin, AP aging and vendor spend
  • Establish agreed data definitions and a single set of financial metrics to support month-end close and accrual accuracy
  • Reconcile Eclipse financial reporting with InEight project controls to align commitments and cost to a single source of truth
  • Lead training, SOPs and change management to drive adoption of P2P improvements with field and office users
  • Direct the work of contract and vendor resources when needed

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary education in Business, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in business analysis or finance process roles
  • Proven, hands-on P2P / AP ownership experience
  • Demonstrated experience improving P2P within an ERP environment, including workflow, approvals, three-way match and vendor master
  • Strong Power BI (DAX, data modelling, Power Query) and strong SQL skills
  • Working knowledge of financial reporting concepts such as job cost, WIP, committed cost, accruals and progress billing
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification
  • Experience with Eclipse (Explorer Software) or a comparable construction ERP system
  • Experience with AI agents to improve business process

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

  • Background in construction, energy services, or another project-based / heavy-industry environment
  • Experience with InEight or a comparable project controls platform
  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric / Azure data platforms, Incorta, or Databricks
