A Software Development Associate is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications. They work closely with more experienced developers and project teams to help build and improve software solutions according to specifications. Their tasks often include debugging code, writing documentation, and participating in code reviews. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those new to the software development field, providing foundational experience and growth opportunities.

What are some common challenges software development associates face when transitioning from academic projects to professional work?

Software Development Associates often find that real-world projects involve more collaboration, code reviews, and adherence to coding standards than academic assignments. In a professional setting, there is also a greater emphasis on version control, agile methodologies, and communicating progress with team members and stakeholders. Balancing multiple tasks and deadlines, learning to navigate legacy codebases, and quickly adapting to new tools or frameworks are frequent challenges, but they also provide valuable opportunities for growth and skill development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Associate, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and a relevant bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and agile development methodologies is typically expected. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and a willingness to learn new technologies set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities enable associates to effectively contribute to projects, adapt to evolving requirements, and collaborate within dynamic development teams.

Senior Software Engineer – File Integrations

Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid)

Classification: Exempt

Status: Full-Time

Reports to: Manager, Software Engineering

Purpose

The Senior Software Engineer — File Integrations owns the design, development, and reliability of PANTHERx's flat-file exchange capabilities: ingesting data from external flat files into internal systems and generating outbound files sent from PANTHERx to external partners. This role combines deep SSIS and T-SQL expertise with strong C# application development skills, and carries senior-level responsibility for SDLC discipline and test environment integrity across the File Integrations workstream — a tower currently supported by a single internal engineer.

Responsibilities

File Ingestion & Generation

  • Design, build, and maintain SSIS packages that ingest data from external flat files into PANTHERx systems, handling varied file formats, schemas, and delivery schedules.
  • Design, build, and maintain processes that generate outbound flat files from PANTHERx systems for delivery to external partners, ensuring format, timing, and content meet partner specifications.
  • Develop and optimize complex T-SQL logic (stored procedures, ETL transformations, data validation) supporting both inbound and outbound file processing.
  • Build and maintain C# applications and services that support file processing, validation, transformation, and orchestration outside of SSIS where appropriate.

Reliability & Data Quality

  • Implement validation, error handling, and reconciliation logic to catch malformed, incomplete, or late files before they reach downstream systems or external partners.
  • Monitor scheduled file jobs, troubleshoot failures, and drive root-cause resolution for recurring issues.
  • Maintain clear audit trails and logging for all inbound and outbound file activity to support troubleshooting and partner inquiries.

SDLC Discipline & Test Environments

  • Ensure all File Integrations work follows the full software development lifecycle: requirements/design review, code review, testing, deployment, and post-release validation — no shortcuts given the tower's single-engineer history.
  • Own the existence and integrity of lower environments (dev/test/staging) for File Integrations work, ensuring changes can be tested predictably and repeatably before reaching production.
  • Build and maintain repeatable test data sets and test harnesses for both inbound and outbound file scenarios, including edge cases (malformed files, partial deliveries, schema drift).
  • Document environment configuration, promotion processes, and testing procedures so File Integrations work is no longer dependent on a single person's undocumented knowledge.

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Partner with the Enterprise Pharmacy Systems and Market Place teams on integration points where file-based exchange intersects with ESB, Camunda, or partner API workstreams.
  • Communicate file-processing status, issues, and partner-impacting changes clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers on SSIS, T-SQL, and file-integration best practices as the tower grows.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related software engineering experience.
  • Strong, hands-on experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for building and maintaining ETL/file-processing packages.
  • Strong T-SQL skills, including complex query writing, stored procedures, and performance tuning.
  • Strong experience developing C# applications and services.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining flat-file ingestion and/or generation processes in a production environment.
  • Solid understanding of the full SDLC and experience ensuring lower (dev/test/staging) environments exist and are used to produce predictable, repeatable test results.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills; ability to work independently and mentor others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare, specialty pharmacy, or another regulated industry with strict partner file-exchange requirements.
  • Familiarity with SFTP-based file delivery, PGP encryption, or other secure file-transfer standards.
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory or other modern orchestration tools as a complement to SSIS.
  • Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare data standards.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and CI/CD tooling (Azure DevOps).
