What is a software configuration manager?

A Software Configuration Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and controlling changes to software products throughout their lifecycle. They manage configuration processes, version control, and ensure consistency, traceability, and quality of software releases. Their work involves setting up and maintaining tools for source control, coordinating with development and operations teams, and enforcing policies for software builds and deployments. This role is critical for minimizing errors, tracking changes, and supporting compliance in software development projects.

What do software configuration managers do?

The job duties of a software configuration manager involve overseeing the build and release of software. Your responsibilities in this career include version control to track revisions made to the source code of programs, and you may use a GIT system to track such changes. You test and refine the software coding so that it remains appropriately configured throughout the development process. As a manager, you may hire employees or contract with third parties to perform the tasks required by your employer or client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software configuration manager, and why are they important?

A Software Configuration Manager needs a solid understanding of software development processes, version control, and change management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools like Git, Jenkins, or Ansible, and certifications such as ITIL or CMII, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure seamless collaboration across development and operations teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining software integrity, enabling efficient releases, and minimizing errors in complex software environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software configuration managers, and how can they be addressed?

Software Configuration Managers often encounter challenges such as managing complex version control systems, ensuring consistent documentation, and coordinating changes across multiple teams. To address these, it's important to establish clear configuration management processes, maintain thorough communication with development and QA teams, and use automation tools to streamline build and release cycles. Proactively resolving conflicts and regularly updating configuration baselines also help minimize disruptions and maintain project integrity.

Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
PLM Ownership & Administration
  • System Governance: Act as the primary administrator for PDM and PLM (Windchill), serving as the system of record for the product lifecycle, engineering BOMs, and part libraries.
  • Data Architecture: Oversee part number creation, lifecycle state governance, and user access control. Manage the functional application of Part Types, Phantoms, and Subassemblies.
  • Integration Management: Synchronize data between PLM, ERP, and CAD systems to ensure a single source of truth for product data across the global organization.
  • Digital Transformation: Lead end-to-end Windchill implementations and drive transformation initiatives, managing program governance, milestones, and executive reporting.

Change Management & Design Integrity
  • Promotion & Workflow: Own the engineering change process (ECO/ECN). Drive the Promotion Request process in Windchill and develop custom reports to track release cycles and system metrics.
  • Technical Review: Review engineering drawings prior to release to validate clarity, dimensioning, and GD&T compliance (ASME Y14.5).
  • NPI Support: Support NPI builds (EVT/DVT/PVT) by ensuring BOM and drawing readiness, collaborating cross-functionally with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.
  • Make/Buy Strategy: Collaborate with Supply Chain to manage Make/Buy attributes, ensuring the PLM-to-ERP integration correctly triggers procurement or production.

Standards & Training
  • Best Practices: Develop and maintain CAD/PLM best practice guides and conduct training sessions to ensure consistency across all global engineering teams.
  • Data Analytics: Leverage Excel and Power BI to create dashboards that visualize configuration health and identify bottlenecks in the release process.

Qualifications
  • Experience: 5+ years in Configuration Management, PLM Administration, or Mechanical Design Support within a complex hardware environment (semiconductor, robotics, or aerospace preferred).
  • Technical Expert: Advanced hands-on proficiency in PTC Windchill (Administration, workflow management, and report generation).
  • CAD & Standards: Proficiency in Creo, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD with a focus on large assembly management. Solid understanding of ASME Y14.5 GD&T and 2D drawing management.
  • System Knowledge: Deep understanding of PLM data objects, including the logic of Phantoms, Subassemblies, and Make vs. Buy procurement triggers.
  • Communication: Strong cross-functional skills; comfortable coordinating technical initiatives across multiple global subsystem teams.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
