What is a software configuration engineer?

Software Configuration Engineers are professionals responsible for managing and controlling changes in software projects. They ensure that software versions, code, and documentation are properly tracked and maintained using configuration management tools. Their role is crucial for maintaining consistency, preventing errors, and supporting collaboration among development teams. They often work closely with developers, quality assurance, and IT operations to streamline software delivery processes.

How does a software configuration engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams during a software release cycle?

Software Configuration Engineers play a critical role in bridging development and operations teams, especially during release cycles. They coordinate version control, manage build environments, and ensure that configuration management processes are followed so releases are stable and repeatable. Collaboration often involves frequent communication with developers to resolve build issues and with operations staff to deploy code changes smoothly. This teamwork helps prevent misconfigurations and streamlines the deployment pipeline, making the release process more efficient and reliable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software configuration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Configuration Engineer, you need a strong background in software development lifecycle management, version control, and scripting, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as Git, Jenkins, SVN, build automation systems, and configuration management platforms like Ansible or Puppet is typical. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure reliable software releases, efficient collaboration, and robust configuration processes critical to project success.

What is the difference between Software Configuration Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware Configuration EngineerSoftware Developer

Job description

At Stoke, we believe a thriving space economy will enable a vibrant, sustainable, and equitable future here on Earth. That is why weโ€™re building Nova, our fully and rapidly reusable launch vehicle. Designed for daily flight, Nova tackles the core challenges of space transportation by reducing cost, increasing availability, and improving reliability. By radically lowering launch costs and increasing flight cadence, weโ€™re helping create a truly scalable space industry.

Our team is mission-driven, collaborative, and empowered to take ownership of their work. If you want to work alongside some of the most dedicated and talented people on Earth, weโ€™d love to have you join us.

Description

Reusable launch systems are the key to seamlessly connecting Earth and space. We are looking for a multidisciplined Software Integration Engineer - HIL to join our software integration team. This role is the translation layer between our vehicle software team, the rest of the physical vehicle (avionics, engines, fluids, etc.), and our vehicle operators. You won't just be writing software and managing configurations, you will use handsโ€‘on bringing hardware to life. One day you might be writing scripts to manage fleet configurations, and the next you will be physically building out HIL (hardwareโ€‘inโ€‘theโ€‘loop) racks or designing the architecture for a new checkout cart to get Nova to the pad.

If you enjoy the continuum from physical hardware state to the software stack that controls it and the chaos of coordinating with the teams that build both, this is the role for you. As we push aggressively toward the first launch of Nova, our 100% reusable rocket, you will be joining a fastโ€‘paced, hardwareโ€‘rich environment where extreme ownership is expected, rapid iteration is a daily reality, and your work directly impacts our mission to achieve daily space flight.

Responsibilities
  • Own the lifecycle and software configuration of our HIL and ground support equipment (GSE) to ensure seamless integration across our unified vehicle software stack
  • Develop automated systems to track hardware deployments and dynamically generate standardized software configurations across the fleet
  • Partner with hardware teams to design, build, and integrate GSE racks and checkout carts for test and launch operations
  • Write software that interfaces directly with physical ground infrastructure, including automating networks, ground computers, DAQs, and power supplies
  • Act as the technical bridge between software and hardware disciplines, executing handsโ€‘on checkouts and troubleshooting anomalies to get Nova to the pad
  • Support hardware teams and help our own vehicle software team prioritize feature requests based on their needs
Qualifications
  • 1+ years of professional experience in software development, hardware integration, or systems engineering
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
  • Proficient in softwareโ€‘based configuration management and modern software operations
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with physical hardware integration, test equipment, and rack setup
  • Experience managing and tracking a fleet of hardware deployments across multiple test and operational environments
  • Networking foundation, including TCP/IP, routing, subnetting, and configuring managed switches
  • Demonstrated ability to write software in systems languages, particularly Rust, within a Linux environment
  • Strong systemsโ€‘thinking approach with the ability to troubleshoot complex electromechanical anomalies from the software layer down to the physical hardware
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with autonomous systems
  • Experience in technical project management or leading crossโ€‘functional engineering initiatives
  • Prior experience building and operating HIL test environments or executing avionics checkouts for aerospace or autonomous vehicles
  • Familiarity with hardware communication protocols (CAN, RS422/485, LVDS), PLCs, and data acquisition (DAQ) systems
  • Experience reading, understanding, and creating technical documentation, system diagrams, and/or electrical schematics
Benefits
  • Equity โ€“ We know that our employees are the reason we succeed. To give everyone a stake in our future, we are pleased to offer equity in the form of stock options to all regular, fullโ€‘time employees.
  • Comprehensive benefits program including subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Companyโ€‘paid life and disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • 4 weeksโ€™ Paid Time Off
  • Holidays โ€“ 10 days (including an endโ€‘ofโ€‘year closure)
  • Paid Family/Parental Leave
  • Onโ€‘site gym or monthly wellness stipend (depending on location)
  • Dog friendly offices!
Compensation

Target Levels:

  • Level 1 Range: $98,805 - $148,155
  • Level 2 Range: $123,480 - $185,220
  • Level 3 Range: $154,350 - $231,525

Our job posts are intentionally written to attract a wide variety of experience levels, and we make decisions about the right fit on a perโ€‘candidate basis.

Your actual level and base salary will be decided based on your specific experience and skill level.
