What is software asset management?

Software Asset Management (SAM) is a set of processes and practices designed to manage and optimize the purchase, deployment, maintenance, utilization, and disposal of software applications within an organization. SAM helps ensure that software licenses are used efficiently, remain compliant with vendor agreements, and helps reduce costs by preventing over-purchasing or underutilization. It also plays a crucial role in reducing legal risks associated with software piracy and improving overall IT efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in software asset management?

To excel in Software Asset Management, you need a solid understanding of software licensing models, IT asset management principles, and compliance requirements, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like ITIL or SAM-specific credentials. Familiarity with Software Asset Management tools such as Flexera, ServiceNow, or Snow License Manager is typically expected. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital for negotiating with vendors and collaborating across departments. These abilities ensure cost-effective software usage, reduce compliance risks, and support efficient IT operations.

How does a software asset management professional typically collaborate with IT, procurement, and compliance teams?

Software Asset Management (SAM) professionals regularly partner with IT to monitor software deployments and ensure proper usage across the organization. They work closely with procurement to assess licensing needs, negotiate vendor contracts, and manage renewals to maximize cost savings. Additionally, SAM professionals coordinate with compliance teams to ensure all software usage aligns with legal and regulatory requirements, minimizing audit risks. These cross-functional collaborations are essential for maintaining an efficient and compliant software environment.

What it's like to be a Northbridge Software Asset Management Analyst at Northbridge Financial

The Software Asset Management (SAM) Analyst is responsible for managing the lifecycle of hardware and software assets across Northbridge Financial Corporation, including acquisition, inventory tracking, utilization, compliance, optimization, and disposal.

This role maintains accurate asset and licensing records, monitors software usage, and ensures compliance with vendor agreements and corporate policies. The successful candidate will help identify cost-saving opportunities, reduce compliance risk, improve asset visibility, and ensure the organization maximizes the value of its technological investments through effective asset management practices.

We want your talent!

If you are great at:

If you have:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (i.e. Computer Science) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of Software Asset Management experience (or equivalent experience for senior roles).
  • Experience with Flexera is a requirement.
  • Strong understanding of software licensing models, vendor agreements, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing major software vendors such as Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle, IBM, SAP, VMware, or Salesforce.
  • Experience conducting software compliance reviews.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

We really mean it when we say we put you first. Here are a few ways how:

  • We have a flexible hybrid model that allows you to work from home up to 2 days per week, with added flexibility for when you really need it.

  • We offer competitive salaries and support your financial health through our employee share purchase plan, pension plans, RRSP, discounts on staff insurance, and more!

  • We help you prioritize your well-being from day one through flexible health benefits, early leave days, wellness programs, rewards, and recognition programs.

  • NBFC cares about the community and supports the causes you believe in with donation matching and team volunteer days.

We're committed to pay transparency and fairness. The base salary range for this role is $82,000 - $123,000, which reflects the expected base pay - not the total compensation package. The actual base salary may vary depending on your experience, skills, and alignment with the position. We're also open to candidates at different levels, so if this range doesn't quite match your expectations, don't let that hold you back - we'd still love to hear from you.

This is a real opportunity - we're actively hiring! If the role sounds like a good fit, we encourage you to apply. Beyond base pay, we offer a robust Total Rewards program that includes benefits, wellness support, and other meaningful perks.

We also want to be transparent about our hiring process. While one of our systems includes AI capabilities, over 99% of our screening is done by real people. We believe in thoughtful, human-centered hiring decisions, and are committed to giving every application the attention it deserves.
