Job description

The City of Lenexa's Parks and Recreation Department is hiring a Recreation Sports Official to support recreational sports programs by managing gameplay, enforcing rules, and helping provide a safe and positive experience for all participants. Sports include Baseball, Softball, Flag Football, and Basketball.
Schedule:
  • Work occurs primarily during games held in the evenings and on weekends.
  • Hours vary by season and program needs.

Position Summary:
This position oversees the flow of games by managing game time, enforcing rules, communicating with coaches and participants, and inspecting playing areas for safety. Officials help ensure programs operate smoothly and assist with additional recreation activities as needed.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage game time and gameplay in a professional manner.
  • Apply and enforce all rules consistently for each sporting event.
  • Inspect playing surfaces to ensure participant safety.
  • Clarify rules and expectations to coaches before each game.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, coaches, and participants.
  • Assist with additional recreational sports programs.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Experience participating in sports or previous sports officiating experience
  • Understanding of the rules of basketball, flag football, baseball, and other recreational sports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants and maintain positive relationships with the public.
  • Ability to officiate multiple sporting events.
  • First Aid/AED certification required within 60 days of hire.

The rate of pay is $18.75 per hour.
Physical and Environmental Factors:
Work occurs indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions. The position requires long periods of standing and the ability to lift and move program materials. Physical demands include frequent walking and standing, with occasional bending, lifting, and similar movements.
Offers of employment are contingent upon successfully passing a drug screen. A background check is required for applicants aged 18 and older.
