What is a SoC validation engineer?

SoC Validation Engineers are professionals who test and verify System-on-Chip (SoC) designs to ensure they function correctly before mass production. They develop and execute test plans, debug hardware and software issues, and work closely with design and verification teams to identify and resolve problems. Their goal is to ensure the SoC meets all specifications and requirements, helping to deliver reliable and high-quality products. This role is critical in the semiconductor and electronics industries, especially as SoCs become increasingly complex.

How does a SoC validation engineer typically collaborate with design and verification teams during a project?

As a Soc Validation Engineer, you'll work closely with both design and verification teams throughout the development lifecycle. You are often responsible for translating design specifications into comprehensive validation plans, identifying edge cases, and ensuring thorough coverage. Regular cross-team meetings and collaborative debugging sessions are common, allowing you to provide feedback on design issues and suggest improvements. This collaborative environment helps ensure that the final system-on-chip meets performance, functionality, and reliability standards before production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SoC validation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SoC Validation Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or computer engineering, experience with validation methodologies, and proficiency in digital design concepts. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as UVM, SystemVerilog, scripting languages (like Python or Perl), and simulation/debug platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in cross-functional teams and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure the reliability, performance, and successful deployment of advanced system-on-chip products.

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward.

THE ROLE:

We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Lead SoC Validation Architect to join our growing Systems Design Engineering team. In this highly visible role, you will help drive the quality, reliability, and performance of AMD's next-generation products by advancing validation methodologies, debug capabilities, and automation solutions across the silicon lifecycle.

As a technical leader, you will partner with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve complex system-level challenges, improve validation efficiency, and accelerate product readiness. Our team fosters technical innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning while enabling engineers to make a significant impact on industry-leading technologies.

THE PERSON:

You are a systems-minded engineer with deep expertise in validation, debug, and software-driven engineering solutions. You thrive in complex technical environments, enjoy solving challenging platform issues, and have a proven ability to influence technical direction across multidisciplinary teams.

Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, hands-on validation experience, and the ability to drive scalable automation and debug strategies from concept through production.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Driving technical innovation to improve AMD’s capabilities across validation, including tool and script development, technical and procedural methodology enhancement, and various internal and cross-functional technical initiatives
  • Debugging issues found during the process, bring-up, validation, and production phases of SOC programs
  • Working with multiple teams, and tracking test execution to make sure all features are validated and optimized on time
  • Working closely with supporting technical teams
  • Engaging in other software/hardware modeling frameworks
  • Leading collaborative approach with multiple teams

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Programming/scripting skills (e.g. C/C++, Perl, Ruby, Python).
  • Debug techniques and methodologies
  • Extensive experience with common lab equipment, including protocol/logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Extensive experience with board/platform-level debug, including delivery, sequencing, analysis, and optimization
  • Extensive knowledge of system architecture, technical debug, and validation strategy
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and pronounced attention to details
  • Must be a self-starter, and able to independently drive tasks to completion

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in electrical or computer engineering

LOCATION:

Austin, TX

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
