What is a SoC Performance Optimization Engineer?

A SoC (System on Chip) Performance Optimization Engineer is responsible for analyzing, improving, and maximizing the performance of integrated circuits that combine multiple components into a single chip. These engineers work on optimizing hardware and software interactions, identifying performance bottlenecks, and implementing solutions to enhance the efficiency and speed of the SoC. Their work often involves performance profiling, benchmarking, and collaborating with design, software, and verification teams to ensure the chip meets required performance targets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SoC Performance Optimization Engineer?

To excel as an SoC Performance Optimization Engineer, you need a solid background in computer engineering, microarchitecture, and performance analysis, often supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with tools such as performance profilers, simulation environments, and hardware description languages (HDLs) like Verilog or VHDL is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in analyzing complex systems and collaborating across teams. These skills are crucial for identifying bottlenecks, improving efficiency, and ensuring high-performance in increasingly complex system-on-chip designs.

What are some common challenges faced by SoC Performance Optimization Engineers in cross-functional teams?

SoC Performance Optimization Engineers often work closely with hardware designers, software developers, and validation teams, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and communication. Balancing trade-offs between power, performance, and area (PPA) while considering system-level constraints is a frequent hurdle. Additionally, rapidly evolving technology and tight project deadlines require adaptability and strong problem-solving skills. Collaboration and proactive communication are essential to ensure that optimization goals are met without impacting other aspects of the system.

• Location: On-site at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB)
• Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement and more
• Reason for the position: Team expansion FTE on contract with ample runway
• Qualifications: Preferably those that show Professional and/or Expert level in load balancers, firewalls, protocol and/or packet tracing. Since there is no perfect certification path for this role, heavier weight is placed on relevant experience. What This Job Feels Like
• Work spans applications, systems, and network layers depending on where performance issues appear. • Daily focus on high-impact challenges that directly relate to the users’ quality of experience - solving complex performance problems is the norm. • Ownership of optimization projects from root cause identification to the establishment of resolution plans and performance improvement. • High OPTEMPO - individuals must be able to self-manage task lists based on communicated priorities What You’ll Do
• Diagnose and optimize application performance end-to-end, from operating systems and middleware down to packet-level analysis. • Analyze DNS, load balancers, firewalls, and application architecture to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies. • Collaborate with development, systems, and network teams to implement optimization solutions. • Perform root cause analysis for latency, throughput, and availability issues. Drive remediation and efficiency improvements. • Mentor less-senior engineers in monitoring, instrumentation, and performance troubleshooting. Tech Knowledge / Skills
• Expertise in application and middleware performance monitoring (web apps, databases, APIs). • Deep understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/S, SSL/TLS, and related protocols. • Expertise in and hands-on experience with load balancers, firewalls, and packet capture/analysis tools (Wireshark, tcpdump, etc.). • (Preferred) Familiarity with APM platforms and system-level troubleshooting across OS and network layers. Requirements
• 8+ years experience in application performance optimization, systems, or network engineering in secure/cleared environments. • Active TS; must be able to obtain TS/SCI. • Demonstrated progressive responsibility and ownership indicative of senior expertise.
• DoD 8140 compliance required
• The likely salary range for this position is $140,000-$190,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, and contractual agreements and could fall outside of this range.
