Location: Woodlawn, MD

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Architect to design, build, optimize, and secure scalable, high-performance database solutions. This role will lead the architecture and management of cloud data infrastructure across AWS and Snowflake, leveraging automation and advanced database technologies to support enterprise analytics and data processing pipelines.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in relational and NoSQL databases, AWS database services, Snowflake, data architecture, performance optimization, security, automation, and cloud infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect scalable, high-performance, and secure database solutions across AWS and Snowflake.
  • Operate AWS database and processing services, including RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, EMR, Neptune, and ElastiCache.
  • Manage, optimize, and integrate high-performance AWS EMR clusters while minimizing operational costs.
  • Integrate databases with AWS services such as Lambda, S3, EC2, and Glue.
  • Apply IAM, encryption, VPC, and Security Group best practices to meet data security and compliance requirements.
  • Design and implement backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and failover solutions, including Multi-AZ deployments and read replicas.
  • Troubleshoot AWS-related database issues and production incidents.
  • Design, implement, and manage virtual data warehouses in Snowflake.
  • Develop complex SQL queries for data analysis, transformation, and reporting.
  • Optimize database performance through query tuning, caching, clustering, indexing, and auto-scaling.
  • Ensure compliance with SSA security, privacy, and data management policies.
  • Deliver technical briefings and presentations to management, clients, vendors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior and mid-level developers.
  • Lead requirements gathering, solution design, and implementation for complex data and database projects.
  • Develop and maintain database automation using infrastructure-as-code and scripting technologies.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree with 5+ years of experience, Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of experience, or 13+ years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a STEM-related discipline; Master's or Doctorate may offset experience requirements.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Database Architect with expertise in relational and NoSQL database design and schema optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, ElastiCache, EMR, and Neptune.
  • Strong knowledge of IAM, encryption, VPCs, Security Groups, and data storage compliance.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for AWS-related database issues and incidents.
  • Experience optimizing queries, managing caching and clustering, and leveraging auto-scaling for database workloads.
  • Proficiency with Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CLI, Python, Bash, or PowerShell for database automation.
  • Strong expertise in relational and NoSQL database management, data modeling, normalization, and schema design.
  • Experience deploying, tuning, and integrating cost-effective EMR clusters across diverse data sources.
  • Experience designing backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and failover solutions, including Multi-AZ and read replicas.
  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex queries for data analysis, transformation, and reporting.
AWS Cloud Qualifications
  • Proven ability to architect scalable, high-performance, and secure database solutions.
  • Strong proficiency in query optimization, indexing, caching, and performance tuning using AWS tools.
  • Experience integrating databases with Lambda, S3, EC2, Glue, and other AWS services.
  • Experience securing AWS clusters and managing IAM roles and permissions.
  • Experience implementing encryption and monitoring AWS jobs and infrastructure using CloudWatch and CloudTrail.
  • Experience with AWS database and data processing services across diverse enterprise workloads.
Snowflake Qualifications
  • Proficiency designing, implementing, and managing virtual data warehouses in Snowflake.
  • Strong understanding of Snowflake micro-partitions and performance optimization.
  • Experience with schema design, normalization, and efficient data structures in Snowflake.
  • Experience with data ingestion, transformation, and loading using Snowflake features and integration tools.
  • Knowledge of Snowflake role-based access control, data encryption, and security best practices.
  • Experience integrating Snowflake with BI platforms such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Experience using Python for data pipelines and machine learning applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading requirements gathering, solution design, and implementation across complex projects.
  • Experience scripting in Linux environments to automate ETL solutions and data migration jobs.
  • Knowledge of software quality techniques and practices, including automated testing, TDD, performance analysis, and CI/CD.
  • Experience contributing to architectural tactical roadmaps, data solutions, and core architectural standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing production-related tasks accurately and on schedule.
  • Prior experience working in a federal agency or public sector environment.
  • Strong communication skills across data science, analytics, and business stakeholder teams.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, non-technical language for business stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and consistently deliver within deadlines.
