Job Description Title: SMT Engineer Comp: $100,000-$130,000 Location: New Albany, Indiana Our client is seeking immediate assistance in identifying a candidate for an SMT Engineer direct hire position in New Albany, Indiana. Responsibilities: Serve as a subject matter expert within the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturing and Interconnect Processing Group (IPG) Support internal and external customers with SMT processing, soldering, and PCB/PCBA manufacturing technical issues Troubleshoot SMT line and connector processing challenges across full production workflows Develop, optimize, and validate reflow oven thermal profiles to ensure product quality and consistency Support and evaluate full SMT processes including solder paste printing, SPI, pick-and-place, reflow soldering, X-ray inspection, and electrical testing Assist with new product introduction (NPI) from concept through production release Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, sales, and marketing teams on process and product development Review and approve engineering documentation including PCB layouts, solder stencils, and connector designs Develop process recommendations for PCB footprints, stencil design, placement requirements, packaging, and rework procedures Support equipment evaluation, procurement, and maintenance activities within SMT operations Provide remote and onsite technical support to customers, including troubleshooting and process consultation Create technical documentation, reports, and customer-facing recommendations Split time between hands-on lab/manufacturing support (~40%) and technical/customer communication (~60%) Required Skills (Must Have): 5+ years of SMT manufacturing or process engineering experience (10+ years strongly preferred) Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting SMT equipment (not solely programming or maintenance) Strong understanding of full SMT line processes including: Solder paste printing Pick-and-place systems Reflow oven profiling SPI and AOI inspection X-ray inspection PCB/PCBA assembly and testing Strong knowledge of IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 standards Familiarity with IPC, JEDEC, and MIL reliability/process standards Strong root cause analysis and troubleshooting skills Excellent technical writing and customer communication skills Ability to work independently with strong organization and follow-through Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Self-starter mindset with strong problem-solving ability Preferred Skills (Nice to Have): Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline Six Sigma certification or formal process improvement training IPC certifications Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Gerber files, or electronics modeling tools Experience supporting electronics manufacturing customers in a technical or field-facing role Background in connector/interconnect manufacturing industry Experience in high-reliability electronics (AI hardware, server systems, aerospace, etc.) Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and new product development support #ID9515.
