What is an SMT engineer?

An SMT Engineer, or Surface Mount Technology Engineer, is a professional responsible for overseeing the assembly and manufacturing processes that use surface mount technology to mount electronic components onto printed circuit boards (PCBs). Their role involves programming and maintaining SMT machines, troubleshooting assembly issues, optimizing production processes, and ensuring product quality. SMT Engineers play a crucial role in electronics manufacturing, working closely with production teams to improve efficiency and address technical challenges in the assembly line.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SMT engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SMT Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, PCB assembly processes, and surface mount technology, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with SMT machines, solder paste inspection (SPI), automated optical inspection (AOI) systems, and certifications like IPC-A-610 are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in troubleshooting issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring high-quality, efficient production and minimizing defects in electronic manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges SMT engineers face when working with new product introductions?

SMT Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing PCB layouts for manufacturability, selecting appropriate components for automated assembly, and fine-tuning process parameters for new products. They must work closely with design teams to resolve manufacturability issues and frequently troubleshoot unexpected defects during trial runs. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving are key to ensuring a smooth transition from prototype to mass production.

What is the difference between Smt Engineer vs PCB Design Engineer?

AspectSmt EngineerPCB Design Engineer
Required CredentialsDiploma/Degree in Electronics, Certification in SMT processesDiploma/Degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, PCB Design certifications
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, assembly linesDesign offices, CAD software environments
Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing companies, OEMsElectronics design firms, PCB manufacturing companies

While both roles are involved in electronics manufacturing, Smt Engineers focus on the assembly and process of surface-mount technology, ensuring quality and efficiency on production lines. PCB Design Engineers, on the other hand, are responsible for designing printed circuit boards using CAD tools. Both roles require electronics knowledge but differ in their focus areas within the electronics industry.

What is the qualification for Smt Engineer?

To become an Smt Engineer, candidates typically need a diploma or bachelor's degree in engineering or technology in relevant fields such as electrical, electronics, or communication engineering. Relevant technical skills, certifications, and sometimes work experience are also important for qualification.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

We're seeking a Senior New Product Introduction Engineer to help transition advanced electronics and avionics from prototype to flight-ready hardware for next-generation lunar systems.

If you're from automotive, consumer electronics, high tech, aerospace, defense, contract manufacturing, or adjacent industries, your electronics manufacturing expertise translates directly to our needs. This role is ideal for someone who can navigate electronics design and manufacturability trade spaces, and who can manage complex NPI programs effectively because they have working technical knowledge of the hardware.

We are primarily seeking a senior-level engineer to help establish and scale this capability, but are open to exceptional candidates at adjacent career levels whose electronics manufacturing, NPI, and cross-functional execution experience align with the needs of the role.

You will serve as a technical bridge between development, manufacturing, test, supply chain, suppliers, and contract manufacturers, ensuring design intent, manufacturability inputs, build strategy, and production risks are understood and acted on throughout the hardware NPI lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Execute new product introduction for complex electronics assemblies, PCBAs, and avionics hardware.
  • Drive DFM, DFA, and DFT improvements through hands-on analysis and manufacturability feedback.
  • Coordinate build configuration readiness, including engineering documentation, release packages, and build records.
  • Support manufacturing process development, validation, troubleshooting, and technical issue closure.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for manufacturing, assembly, and test failures.
  • Represent the development team on manufacturing floors and with contract manufacturers to resolve build issues and close technical gaps.
  • Align build strategies, prototype and pilot build objectives, risk posture, and production readiness criteria.
  • Communicate build risks, technical issues, and production-readiness status in program reviews and cross-functional forums.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field.
  • 8+ years of experience combining electronics manufacturing expertise with technical program or NPI coordination responsibilities.
  • Hands-on experience with PCBA manufacturing, SMT, electronic assembly processes, or test integration.
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing and product development environments.
  • Strong understanding of DFM, DFA, and DFT principles with demonstrated implementation experience.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or electronics manufacturing services providers on build execution, process development, or issue resolution.
  • Experience driving root cause analysis, corrective actions, or process improvements.
  • Ability to manage complex technical programs while maintaining hands-on engineering involvement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of IPC standards, electronics manufacturing processes, and quality systems.
  • Experience with manufacturing readiness reviews, build readiness reviews, or technical process validation.
  • Experience managing NPI programs from prototype through pilot build and production ramp.
  • Experience with scalable production systems or manufacturing processes designed for volume growth.
  • Background in hardware technical program management, manufacturing program management, product operations, or similar cross-functional hardware execution roles.
  • Experience with complex, multi-board electronic systems, avionics assemblies, or electronics products transitioned from prototype to production.
