Job description

Job Summary: A Driver 1 represents Grand Central Bakery well and is responsible for delivering artisan bakery bread to our customers and neighborhood cafés safely and efficiently. The Driver 1 consistently demonstrates Grand Central Bakery's 3 Steps to Giving Great Service. The Driver 1 has expertise and confidence with 2 or more routes within 6 months from hire and can complete the routes in their entirety within the prescribed time constraints. At 18 months from hire, a Driver 1 can complete 3 routes in their entirety within the prescribed time constraints. The Driver 1 is the first of three Driver positions.
Pay: $24.26 an hour.
  • This is a Full-time, non-exempt role (eligible for overtime)

Specific requirements: Must be able to work Early Morning Start (2:30 am).
Schedule Requirements: Grand Central Bakery operates 7 days a week/365 days a year. Schedule flexibility and the ability to work weekends is required.
Supervision: A Driver 1 reports to the Delivery Manager and is accountable to the Assistant Delivery Manager and Delivery Coordinator.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
• Has expertise and confidence with 3 or more routes and is able to complete the routes in their entirety within the prescribed time constraints. Is able to meet all requirements of the route, including obtaining clearance as required.
• Operates vehicle in a safe and courteous manner while obeying all traffic laws. Uses Smith System safe driving techniques during each delivery route.
• Engages in accurate and careful packing of all products.
• Demonstrates accuracy with invoices and money handling.
• Has knowledge of all bread products and can describe the properties of different products.
• Quality control of product, culling of unusable loaves and recording the loss to the Delivery Coordinator. Is able to:
o Monitors daily product and is able to identify potential quality control concerns.
o Share quality control feedback with appropriate departments and staff.
• Is able to differentiate between and describe products.
• Cleans, stocks, and organize grocery store displays.
• Addresses customer questions or complaints and escalates the concerns to management as needed.
• Keeps delivery vehicles and delivery area clean, organized, and ready for next shift.
• Accurately sorts leftover bread for last minute wholesale orders, freezing and donations.
• Inspects delivery vehicle prior to and after making deliveries and notifies the Delivery Manager or PIC immediately of any required repairs or safety hazards.
• Understands the financial goals of the department and the impact of lost product.
• Understands the role of Delivery in increasing sales and is able to:
o Anticipates and responds to customer needs.
o Engages in suggestive selling with existing customers.
o Alerts sales team to possible account leads.
• Works with managers to enhance and contribute to the continuous improvement of policies and procedures.
• Knows and acts in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of Grand Central Bakery in all parts of their job.
• Works collaboratively with a team. Communicates respectfully and professionally with teammates.
• Delivers excellent customer service - follows the 3 steps to great service at all times.
• Maintains competencies and demonstrate continuous application of these skills throughout the period of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Ability to read, write, and speak English required
• Maintains a valid Food Handler's Card at all times and follows health department guidelines at all times.
• Must demonstrate regular attendance by coming to work on scheduled working days and being on time.
• HS diploma/GED preferred
• Must be able to add, subtract and multiply with ease and accuracy.
• Professional driving experience preferred
• DSD (Direct Sales Delivery) experience preferred
• Has and maintains a valid Oregon or Washington driver's license with 5 years of driving experience and a driving record acceptable to Grand Central Bakery.
• Follows policies and procedures in the Driver Safety Manual at all times.
• Must pass a company administered driving test.
• Is able to successfully complete Smith System training and apply principles at all times.
