Job description

Description Brazoria County Parks Department is growing and thriving in Southeast Texas, and features 10 park sites, one historic site, campgrounds, bays and bayous, miles of public beach along the Gulf Coast, Columbia Bottomland forests, numerous boat ramps and a dedicated and professional team of employees. Example of Duties SFA-Munson Historical County Park features a visitor center, a 75-foot-tall statue of Stephen F. Austin, 17-acre grounds, a small fishing pond, interpretive displays, small retail souvenir and gift shop, picnic pavilions, and other park amenities available to the public, all located on a historic tract of land that was awarded to Stephen F.

Austin himself by the Mexican government. The park is day-use only, with rental of visitor center meeting space available. Park expansion is scheduled for future years and includes a replica village from the 1830s era.

The successful candidate for SFA Park Superintendent will perform the following duties: The SFA-Munson Park Superintendent position is a member of the Brazoria County Parks Dept Senior Staff team, and will report to the Parks Director and Deputy Director. As such, this position will coordinate with Park HQ staff on a variety of internal projects, and alongside other park managers, will help lead, influence and establish park policy, rules, budget, etc. Oversight of Park site and staff: This position is responsible for general oversight and management of day-to-day operations of SFA-Munson Historical Park, and has supervisory responsibilities, with one full-time park interpretive ranger who reports directly to the Superintendent.

This position will also be the lead for coordinating and scheduling park volunteers to help with all SFA-Munson Park events, both on-site and off-site. Applicants can expect approx. 50% of work time schedule will be spent on park interpretive responsibilities, such as leading living history re-enactor events, historic research projects, conducting tours of park grounds and exhibits, presentations and storytelling of Stephen F.

Austin / Brazoria County history; creating displays and exhibits, opening and closing the park, and other park business related items. Some travel will be required to attend relevant Texas history/ interpretive events in the region, attend meetings, conferences, etc. Remaining 50% of time will likely be spent on staff oversight, volunteer coordination, various park planning, office work, taking / booking customer reservations, as well as general park maintenance, grounds work, mowing, cleaning, weedeating, and other related assignments.

This position also will oversee the operations of a small retail souvenir store. This position will also be the lead contact for the Stephen F. Austin 500, which is the park's official Friends Group, and will coordinate with SFA 500 members and volunteers for meetings and to assist as needed with park projects.

Other duties may be assigned by the Parks Director or Parks Deputy Director. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications and Requirements: At least three years of experience working at a historic site, park, museum, or with a relevant heritage tourism nonprofit organization is required. Historic site management and staff oversight experience are strongly preferred.

Background / education in history and familiarity with Texas history is required; expertise in early Texas settlement history, Filibusters through early statehood and 19th-Century events, grasp of Texas' role in U.S./ Mexican / world history is strongly preferred. Experience with historical re-enactments and history interpretation with public audiences is required; involvement in Texas' historical re-enactment and living history community is preferred. Experience / expertise with black powder firearms, 1800's-era artillery, military procedure and protocol is strongly preferred

High school diploma or G.E.D. is required; stronger consideration will be given to those with a college degree or advanced degree, and coursework in history, parks and recreation, heritage tourism or related field. Basic computer knowledge and skills such as use of email and Web sites are required; employee must be willing to learn county park reservation software and be very customer oriented and communicative

Previous experience with point-of-sale, retail and reservations software is a plus. Strong written, verbal and presentation communication skills are required. Basic knowledge of power tools, yard equipment such as lawn mowers and hand tools is preferred; previous experience as a park ranger or with facility / lawn maintenance is a plus.

Successful candidate should be self-motivated and team-oriented, willing to take both initiative and instructions, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. Position may on occasion also help manage probationers and community service workers while they are on site in the park to assist with park maintenance, etc. Employee must be willing to work non-traditional schedule such as four 10-hour days if needed, weekends, holidays, special events and occasional evenings, and comply with all Brazoria County policies such as a uniform dress code, background check and drug test.

Position requires a valid driver's license. In addition to Parks Department uniform, period-relevant historical clothing, attire and costumes will be provided. Supplemental Information Salary, Compensation and Hire Date: This position is a full-time, exempt, supervisory, 40-plus hour per-week role with vacation, holidays and a full county benefits package, and will include use of a take-home county Park vehicle to be used for work related purposes.

Salary range is $64,891 to $73,036 per year ($31.20 per hour to $35.11 per hour), dependent upon qualifications; Job location and Supervisor: This position is located at SFA-Munson Historical Park in Angleton, TX, and reports to the Parks Director and Deputy Director. Available date: position start date is sometime after September 1, 2026, and will be vacant until filled.
