Maintenance Manager Deputy SM

Facilities Operations & Maintenance

Position Summary

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Maintenance Manager - Deputy SM to support and assist in overseeing facility operations and maintenance at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC), Edwards AFB, CA.

The Maintenance Manager - Deputy SM serves as the operational second-in-command for the Facilities Operations & Maintenance (FOM) contract at AFRC. This role is more hands-on and technically engaged than the Site Manager position and is responsible for direct involvement in maintenance execution, reliability improvement initiatives, system troubleshooting, and daily operational oversight across industrial, research, and mission-critical facilities.

The Maintenance Manager - Deputy SM supports contract execution, workforce coordination, CMMS oversight, and technical discipline integration, while ensuring safe, compliant, and high-performing facility operations aligned with federal contract requirements and NASA mission objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Site Manager in overseeing facility operations and maintenance activities at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center.
  • Provide direct, hands-on operational support across industrial and research facility maintenance activities.
  • Support execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and technical problem-solving across electrical, HVAC, fire protection, and BAS systems.
  • Support maintenance management and reliability programs involving industrial equipment and research facilities.
  • Assist in workforce scheduling, task prioritization, and daily operations coordination.
  • Utilize CMMS systems for maintenance tracking, work order management, and performance reporting.
  • Support development and monitoring of CMMS KPIs and performance metrics.
  • Apply Lean tools and methodologies including:
    • Statistical tools
    • Root cause analysis
    • Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
    • Applied statistics
  • Coordinate across predominant technical disciplines including:
    • Substation electrical maintenance
    • HVAC vibration analysis (Vibration Institute Level I or II equivalent knowledge)
    • Fire protection systems
    • Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Ensure compliance with federal, safety, and operational standards.
  • Assist with reporting, documentation, and operational performance tracking using Microsoft Office tools and charting.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as acting Site Manager in the absence of the Site Manager when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in maintenance management, maintenance, and reliability management with industrial equipment or research facilities.
  • Demonstrated hands-on technical experience across multiple maintenance disciplines.
  • Training in predominant technical disciplines including:
    • Substation maintenance (electrical)
    • Vibration Institute Level I or II (HVAC)
    • Fire protection systems
    • Building Automation System (BAS) certification
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with:
    • CMMS systems
    • CMMS KPI creation
    • Microsoft Office
    • Data charting and reporting
  • Certified Professional Maintenance Manager (CPMM) or certification from the Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals (SMRP).
  • Knowledge and application of Lean tools including:
    • Statistical analysis
    • Root cause analysis
    • Failure mode & effect analysis (FMEA)
    • Applied statistics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience supporting federal facilities operations and maintenance contracts.
  • Experience working in industrial, aerospace, research, or mission-critical environments.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary maintenance teams.
