Slp Teaching information

What is an SLP teacher?

SLP teachers, also known as Speech-Language Pathologists in educational settings, are professionals who help students with communication disorders improve their speech, language, and communication skills. They work with children who have difficulties with articulation, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language, and sometimes swallowing disorders. SLP teachers collaborate with classroom teachers, families, and other specialists to support students’ success in school. Their goal is to help students communicate effectively for academic and social participation.

What are the common challenges Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) teachers face when working in a school setting?

SLP teachers in schools often manage large caseloads, balancing direct therapy sessions with paperwork and collaboration with teachers and families. They may work with students who have a wide range of communication disorders, requiring flexibility and creative problem-solving. Additionally, navigating varying schedules and integrating therapy into the academic day can be challenging. However, working closely with multidisciplinary teams helps SLPs tailor interventions and support student progress effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SLP teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SLP Teaching professional, you need a master's degree in speech-language pathology, ASHA certification (CCC-SLP), and a valid state license. Familiarity with assessment tools, therapy materials, individualized education program (IEP) systems, and AAC devices is typically required. Strong interpersonal communication, patience, and organizational skills help build trust with students and collaborate with educational teams. These qualifications and skills ensure effective diagnosis, therapy planning, and support for students with communication disorders in educational settings.

What is the difference between Slp Teaching vs Speech-Language Pathologist?

Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for roles in educational settingsMore clinical and healthcare-focused

Slp Teaching roles focus on providing speech and language support within educational settings, often requiring teaching credentials and working directly with students in schools. Speech-Language Pathologists have a broader clinical scope, working in healthcare environments with a wider range of communication disorders. Both roles require advanced degrees, but their work environments and certifications differ.

Can an SLP become a teacher?

An SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) can become a teacher by obtaining the appropriate teaching certification or licensure required in their region. Transitioning may involve additional coursework or training in education, but their communication and language skills are valuable in teaching roles, especially in special education or speech therapy settings within schools.

Job description

Step into a dynamic school-based role supporting students in life skills programs through the 2026-27 academic year. This full-time contract opportunity offers a balanced schedule between two vibrant campuses, each serving students with unique needs and strengths. Working 40 hours per week, you’ll provide specialized services to a caseload of approximately 33 students, helping them achieve meaningful communication and safe eating outcomes.

Your week will be split—half at a campus focused on special education, and half supporting students whose primary needs involve socialization and behavioral skills. Throughout, you’ll enjoy in-person collaboration with dedicated paraprofessionals, special education staff, and support assistants, plus regular virtual and monthly guidance from an experienced team of SLPs who are committed to sharing expertise and fostering professional growth.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Valid SLP certification with active CCC
  • Previous school-based SLP experience, particularly in life skills or special education settings
  • Expertise in evaluating and supporting feeding and swallowing (safe eating) needs
  • Competence with AAC devices and interventions
  • Confidence supporting students exhibiting a range of behaviors, with access to on-site behavioral teams
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and documentation skills

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Assessing, planning, and implementing individualized therapy for a diverse caseload
  • Supporting safe feeding and swallowing plans, collaborating closely with teachers and caregivers
  • Developing and executing AAC strategies tailored to student strengths and challenges
  • Coordinating with special education teams, paraprofessionals, and monthly SLP meetings to optimize student success
  • Maintaining thorough and compliant documentation

Experience a school year where your specialized skills in AAC and feeding can make a measurable difference. If you are passionate about helping students thrive and eager to work alongside a collaborative, energetic team, apply today to take the next step in your career journey!
