Skydweller information

What are Skydwellers?

Skydwellers are advanced, solar-powered aircraft developed by Skydweller Aero Inc. These aircraft are designed to fly for months without landing, using renewable solar energy and advanced autonomous systems. Their primary applications include telecommunications, surveillance, environmental monitoring, and scientific research. Skydwellers can serve as high-altitude platforms, offering persistent coverage and data collection capabilities in areas where traditional infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

What is the difference between Skydweller vs Drone Pilot?

AspectSkydwellerDrone Pilot
Required CertificationsFAA Part 107, possibly additional certifications for advanced operationsFAA Part 107, remote pilot certificate
Work EnvironmentIndustrial, commercial, and research settings, often involving autonomous or long-endurance flightsVaried environments, including outdoor and indoor locations, often manual control
Industry UsageAerospace, defense, research, and commercial sectorsMedia, agriculture, inspection, and recreational sectors

Skydweller and drone pilots both operate unmanned aerial vehicles, but Skydweller typically refers to autonomous, long-endurance aircraft used in specialized industries like aerospace and defense. Drone pilots usually perform manual control in diverse sectors such as media or agriculture. While both roles require FAA Part 107 certification, Skydweller operators often work with more complex, autonomous systems in professional settings, whereas drone pilots may focus on manual operation for shorter missions.

What are some unique challenges faced by Skydweller pilots during extended flight operations?

Skydweller pilots often face the challenge of managing fatigue and maintaining focus during long-duration, solar-powered flights. Since these operations can last significantly longer than conventional flights, pilots must be adept at monitoring autonomous systems, responding to changing weather conditions, and troubleshooting technical issues in real time. Communication and coordination with ground teams are crucial to ensure mission success and safety. Additionally, adapting to evolving technology and procedures is key as the Skydweller platform continues to develop.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Skydweller, and why are they important?

I'm sorry, but 'Skydweller' is not a recognized real-world professional occupation, so I cannot provide an answer for this job title.

Job description

About Us

Skydweller Aero Inc. is a transatlantic cutting-edge aerospace company developing solar powered aircraft solutions capable of achieving perpetual flight with heavy, and powerful payload capacity. Utilizing technology based upon the longest continuous renewably powered flight program in history, this fast-growing startup is developing a new class of unmanned aircraft, providing the persistence of geosynchronous satellites with the powerful sensing capabilities and the flexibility of a large, airborne platform.Skydweller Aero Inc. has World and US headquarters in Oklahoma City and European offices headquartered in Spain.

About the Role

The rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Agentic AI architectures has accelerated the adoption of artificial intelligence across multiple technical disciplines. Aerospace, Autonomous Systems, and Defense are beginning to leverage these technologies to accelerate and reduce the cost of the R&D lifecycle from concept to operational capability.

Skydweller is seeking an Intern to support the development of Agentic AI capabilities within a safety-critical aerospace R&D environment. This role focuses on building an AI agent prototype from the ground up, providing hands-on experience with core agentic AI building blocks-from architecture and tool integration to implementation and testing.

Student Requirements

  • Interns must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students at an Oklahoma college/university, or CareerTech students concurrently enrolled in college-level coursework.

Qualifications

  • Graduate or upper-level undergraduate student in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • Proven experience with Python programming
  • Prior participation in R&D projects, especially in the fields of Aerospace, Meteorology, Applied Physics, or simulations is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts (LLMs, APIs), or data processing preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Python code using version control (Git) and software best practices
  • Help build and test an Agentic AI working prototype aligned to a real-world R&D use case
  • Document code, workflows, and system architecture
  • Participate in agile development cycles, design reviews, and technical discussions

What You'll Learn

  • End-to-end AI Agent development (design implementation deployment)
  • Practical application of LLMs and emerging Agentic AI architectures
  • Software development in a production-oriented aerospace environment
  • System design under real-world compute and operational constraints

Work Environment

This internship is onsite at the Skydweller Oklahoma City (OKC) Office. The role integrates the intern directly into active aerospace R&D workflows, providing exposure to advanced autonomous systems development and collaboration with AI and engineering teams.

Why Join Skydweller

  • Work on cutting-edge AI applications in aerospace and autonomy
  • Contribute to real-world R&D with measurable impact
  • Gain hands-on experience in one of the fastest-evolving areas of technology
  • Build skills directly aligned with high-demand engineering careers
