Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Position Overview

Sky Blue Builders is seeking a strategic, forward-thinking Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive leadership team. The CFO will lead the financial strategy, financial operations, and long-term financial planning of the company while helping drive innovation and operational excellence across the organization.

This role goes beyond traditional financial management. The CFO will partner closely with the CEO and executive team to support strategic growth, improve operational performance, and leverage technology, data, and emerging toolsโ€”including AIโ€”to improve financial insight and business decision-making.

As a mid-sized, fast-growing construction company, we are looking for a leader who combines strong financial discipline with an innovative mindset and a passion for modernizing systems, analytics, and processes.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as a key advisor to the CEO and executive team on financial strategy and business performance.
  • Lead long-term financial planning, capital strategy, and company growth initiatives.
  • Evaluate strategic opportunities including expansion, partnerships, and investments.
  • Support the leadership team with data-driven insights to guide operational and financial decisions.

Financial Strategy & Performance

  • Lead the development of company budgets, forecasts, and financial models.
  • Monitor financial performance, profitability, and key performance indicators across the organization.
  • Provide executive-level financial analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Partner with operations leadership to improve project profitability and operational efficiency.

Construction Financial Management

  • Oversee construction financial operations including:
    • Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
    • Percentage-of-completion accounting
    • Project profitability analysis
    • Cash flow forecasting tied to project performance
  • Support project teams in improving financial visibility and forecasting accuracy.

Cash Flow & Capital Management

  • Manage company cash flow, working capital, and financial liquidity.
  • Oversee banking relationships, credit facilities, bonding capacity, and financial reporting to lenders.
  • Lead capital planning and financial structuring to support company growth.

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with tax, financial, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee internal financial controls and corporate governance practices.
  • Manage financial risk including insurance, bonding, and contractual exposure.

Technology, Data & AI Innovation

  • Champion the use of modern financial technology, data analytics, and AI tools to improve financial insight and operational efficiency.
  • Identify and implement systems that automate reporting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Partner with leadership to leverage data across the organization to drive smarter decisions.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives across finance and operations.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop the accounting and finance team.
  • Build scalable financial processes and systems to support company growth.
  • Foster a collaborative partnership with operations, preconstruction, and project teams.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • CPA, MBA, or similar advanced credential preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
  • Experience in construction, engineering, or project-based industries strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Construction accounting
    • WIP reporting
    • Job cost management
    • Project-based financial analysis
  • Experience implementing financial systems, ERPs, or analytics tools
  • Demonstrated ability to lead financial strategy for a growing organization
