Location: Prince Edward County High School
Reports To: Head JV Coach / Athletic Director/Principal
Employment Type: Seasonal / Stipend
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in developing student-athletes through skill instruction, character development, and preparation for advancement within the boys basketball program. This position emphasizes foundational skill development, team culture, and alignment with the overall philosophy of Prince Edward County Athletics & Activities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in planning and conducting practices focused on fundamentals, skill development, team concepts, and player confidence.
Support game-day coaching responsibilities, including bench management, player communication, scouting notes, and substitutions as assigned.
Help implement the basketball program's system, terminology, expectations, and culture at the junior varsity level.
Promote sportsmanship, discipline, academic accountability, and positive decision-making among student-athletes.
Assist with supervision of student-athletes before, during, and after practices, games, team travel, and school-sponsored activities.
Collaborate with the Head Varsity Coach and JV Head Coach to support program alignment and player development progression.
Monitor student-athlete growth and communicate readiness, concerns, and development needs to the coaching staff.
Assist with equipment management, locker room expectations, uniform collection, and general program organization.
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
Serve as a positive role model who supports education-based athletics and the mission of Prince Edward County Public Schools.
Build positive relationships with student-athletes, coaches, school staff, families, and community members.
Reinforce the department standard: Branding is Culture. Culture is Branding.
Maintain compliance with school, district, James River District, Region 2A, and VHSL policies and expectations.
Support multi-sport participation, academic success, citizenship, and overall student growth.
QUALIFICATIONS
Prior playing and/or coaching experience in basketball preferred.
Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, player development, and team concepts.
Ability to teach, motivate, and connect with high school student-athletes.
Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
Commitment to education-based athletics and positive program culture.
Must meet all Prince Edward County Public Schools and VHSL coaching requirements.
