COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS PARKS AND RECREATION SERVICE AREA POSITION DESCRIPTION
(NON-EXEMPT)
Position Title: Ice Arena Skate Guard
Position Characteristics: Non-seasonal and/or seasonal, part-time, no benefits.
Weekdays, evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays.
Department: Programs/Ice Arena
Reporting Relationships:
Position Reports To: Skate Guard Supervisor, Skating Coordinator
Positions Directly Supervised: None
Position Purpose:
Responsible for patrolling the ice arena during all skating sessions. Enforce safety rules and handles any accidents that may occur. Maintain and distributes skate rental equipment. Communicate positively and professionally with the public.
Nature and Scope:
This position requires good human relations skills and tact. The ability to skate well, prevent problems and safety hazards, and properly apply first aid are necessary to the successful execution of this position.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties:
  1. Assume responsibility for ensuring the effective performance of Skate Guard functions.
  2. Monitor arena ice during all public sessions in accordance with established standards (one guard per 75 skaters with a maximum of three guards on the ice at any one time).
  3. Monitor arena ice during patch, freestyle, and privately rented sessions as required. Collect for add-on ice usage. Supervises puck practices.
  4. Rotates ice duties with skate counter duties every 20 minutes.
  5. Enforce established safety rules and policies. Warns patrons when behaving inappropriately and explains rules. Keeps skaters off of the rink during ice making times.
  6. Distribute and receive rental skates and equipment.
  7. Maintain skate rental equipment. Disinfect helmets and skates, repair laces, and organize skate racks. Return all equipment to proper location before leaving.
  8. Monitor entrance into arena. Check for wristbands.
  9. Handle accidents appropriately. Apply necessary first aid and complete injury records.
  10. Assist operations in ice maintenance.
  11. Assist in Learn to Skate lessons and monitor Puck Practice.
  12. Assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining positive relations with patrons.
  13. Responds to questions and concerns promptly.
  14. Assist and support patrons in a positive and productive manner.
  15. Handle safety violators tactfully. Determine appropriate penalties.
  16. Provide an example of safe skating for other skaters.
  17. Assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with area personnel and with management.
  18. Follow direction of Skate Guard Supervisor, Shift Manager, and Director as appropriate.
  19. Assist other Skate Guards as necessary.
  20. Inform management of area activities and of any significant problems.
  21. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  22. Assist area staff as needed.
  23. Assume responsibility for other duties as assigned.
  24. Keep work area clean and well maintained. Vacuum floors before the end of each shift, clean restrooms, hockey boxes, counters, skate rental lobby, and carpeted area by the rink.
  25. Lock and secure skate room. Secure the gates surrounding the arena before open skating.
  26. Empty lockers of skates and equipment and place appropriate items in Lost and Found in main office.
  27. Stay current in CPR and First Aid certification.

Performance Measurements:
  1. Skate Guard functions are performed effectively and efficiently.
  2. Equipment and ice arena are properly maintained.
  3. Safety rules and standards are enforced. Injuries and accidents are handled in accordance with established policies and safety violations are properly dealt with.
  4. Good public relations exist with patrons.
  5. Skate equipment is distributed promptly and well maintained.
  6. Management is appropriately informed.

Qualifications:
Training/Education/Certification:
  • Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid certification as of hire date.
  • Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification as of hire date.
  • Approved Criminal Background Investigation check if over 18 years of age.

Required Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of Center safety rules and standards.

Experience Required:
  • Must be at least 16 years old.

Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong ice skating abilities.
  • Tact and good public relations.

Physical Activities and Requirements of this Position:
Balancing: May involve walking, standing, crouching on narrow, slippery or moving surfaces.
Stooping: Bending downward and forward at the waist. Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.
Kneeling: Resting on knee or knees.
Crouching: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing: For extended time periods.
Walking: Especially for long distances.
Lifting: Occurs frequently and requires substantial use of upper body and back muscles.
Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.
Feeling: Perceiving sensual characteristics of objects including size, shape, texture, temperature, etc., through touch.
Talking: Especially when one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
Seeing: Average, ordinary, vision acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.
Physical Strength: Medium work, exerts up to 60 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently.
Working Conditions:
  • Worker subject to changing inside temperature, such as freezers.
  • Must work in very noisy environment requiring workers to shout to communicate.

Mental Activities and Requirements of this Position:
  • General Education-Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two step instructions and to deal with ordinary, standardized situations.
  • General Education-Mathematics Ability: No math skills are required for the position.
  • General Education-Language Ability: No reading required for the position.
