POSITION: Skate Guard

DEPARTMENT: Department of Recreation

SALARY: $ 9.00/hr Seasonal Position

HOURS: Not to Exceed 29 Hours per Week (Working Lunch)

OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:

Under general supervision, ensures the health and safety of patrons of a skating facility by preventing and responding to emergencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
2. Must have mobility on roller skates.
3. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with guest skaters of all ages and be able to promote a safe skating environment.
4. Must assist in maintaining a clean and safe skating area to prevent hazards; must be able to clean and maintain rink seating area and report all lost and found items daily.
5. Must have the ability to enforce all rink rules effectively to all ages of skaters.
6. Must be able to hand out skates.
7. Must be able to identify skates that require repair.
8. Must be able to give accurate rink information in a friendly manner.
9. Must be enthusiastic, self-motivated and able to offer high energy to this position.
10. Must be able to treat all rink guests with excellent service and create a warm welcome to all.
11. Work odd and irregular hours including weekends and holidays

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:

1. See well enough to read standard text at a distance.
2. Hear well enough to communicate over music and equipment.
3. Body mobility to skate, walk, bend, and stop.
4. Stamina to skate for hours and work in various indoor temperatures.
5. Speak fluent English to enforce pool rules and converse on the pool P.A. system and to assist guest.

6. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.

1. Employees are required to perform tasks requiring a relatively high degree of physical strength and endurance, stand and walk for long periods of time, reach above and below waist level, have bodily movement adequate to climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch and traverse rough uneven terrain, safely lift and carry objects.
2. Must communicate clearly in person, by telephone and/or radio, have vision adequate to read fine print and visually identify pool clarity.
3. Must have manual dexterity to safely use equipment and tools.
4. Must be able to pay close attention to detail and to concentrate on work. Vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
5. Effectively carry out the facility's Emergency Action Plan.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. May be assigned duties at various site locations; be subject to call out, or work a varying work week.
2. Works in outdoors environment and may be exposed to varying climatic conditions.
3. May be exposed to varying noise levels, dust, fumes, pollens, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and rodent control agents.
4. May perform work on slippery or uneven surfaces, around moving vehicles and equipment, and equipment with moving parts.
5. Employees may be required to wear a uniform and will be required to wear appropriate safety apparel and equipment.
6. Works indoors in adequate kitchen space, lighting, ventilation and temperatures.
7. Normal exposure to indoor dust/dirt.
8. Works in conditions of potential outbursts or disruptive behavior of general public with potential for personal physical harm.
9. May perform work alone or as part of a team.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Less than high school with 6 months to 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

**** MUST BE ATLEAST 16 YEARS OLD ***

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Skill in the application of skating surveillance and rescue techniques.
• Ability to work individually or as a team.
• Ability to pass pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
• Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
• Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
• Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
• Responsible for attending staff meetings in order to keep current on policies and maintain rescue skills.
• Report to supervisor when materials or supplies are needed.
• Responsible for maintaining personal fitness to be able to perform required functions.
• Responsible for maintaining uniform in a neat, clean appearance.
• Perform related work as required.
