As of Jun 27, 2026, the average hourly pay for site reliability engineer devops in the United States is $63.74, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $54.81 and $72.84 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) and DevOps engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working at large tech companies or in high-cost-of-living areas can earn $500,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, especially for those with expertise in cloud platforms, automation tools, and infrastructure management.

Who gets paid more, SRE or DevOps?

Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) and DevOps engineers often have similar salary ranges, but SREs tend to earn slightly higher due to their focus on reliability, automation, and system stability, often requiring strong coding skills and experience with tools like Kubernetes and cloud platforms. Salary differences can vary based on experience, location, and company size, but both roles are well-compensated in the tech industry.

What is the difference between Site Reliability Engineer Devops vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectSite Reliability Engineer DevopsCloud Engineer
CredentialsCertifications like AWS, Azure, GCP, Linux, Docker, KubernetesCloud-specific certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP), Linux, scripting
Work EnvironmentOperations, development, and infrastructure teams; focus on system reliabilityCloud platform management, deployment, and architecture design
Industry UsageTech, finance, e-commerce, SaaS companiesTech, startups, enterprises adopting cloud solutions
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in system reliability and automationFocus on cloud infrastructure and deployment strategies

While both roles involve cloud technologies and automation, Site Reliability Engineers Devops focus on maintaining system reliability, automation, and incident response. Cloud Engineers primarily design, deploy, and manage cloud infrastructure. Both roles often collaborate but serve different core functions within IT teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer (DevOps), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer (DevOps), you need a strong background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, automation, and scripting, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, Terraform, and monitoring platforms, as well as certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Google Professional SRE, is highly valued. Problem-solving, effective communication, and a proactive mindset are crucial soft skills for anticipating issues and collaborating across teams. These abilities are vital to ensure system reliability, scalability, and seamless deployment pipelines in dynamic production environments.

Can a DevOps engineer become SRE?

A Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) often has a background in DevOps, as both roles focus on automation, system reliability, and infrastructure management. Transitioning from DevOps to SRE typically involves gaining expertise in monitoring, incident response, and service-level objectives, often supported by knowledge of tools like Kubernetes, Prometheus, and cloud platforms. Many skills are transferable, making the switch feasible with additional focus on reliability engineering principles.

What is a Site Reliability Engineer (DevOps)?

A Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) in DevOps is a professional who combines software engineering and IT operations expertise to ensure that systems are reliable, scalable, and efficient. SREs use automation, monitoring, and robust processes to maintain high service uptime and performance. They collaborate closely with development and operations teams to bridge the gap between software development and system administration. Their responsibilities may include incident response, capacity planning, infrastructure management, and continuous improvement of deployment pipelines.

Will AI replace SRE jobs?

AI is expected to augment Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) roles by automating routine tasks such as monitoring, incident response, and infrastructure management. However, SREs will continue to be essential for designing, overseeing complex systems, and making strategic decisions that require human judgment and expertise. The role is likely to evolve with increased use of automation tools and AI-driven insights, but not be fully replaced.

How do Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) in DevOps typically collaborate with software development and IT operations teams?

Site Reliability Engineers in DevOps act as a bridge between software development and IT operations teams by ensuring that applications are reliable, scalable, and maintainable. They work closely with developers to implement automation, monitor system health, and resolve incidents, while also collaborating with operations to improve deployment pipelines and infrastructure management. Regular communication and joint problem-solving are essential, as SREs often participate in on-call rotations, incident reviews, and cross-functional meetings to drive continuous improvement. This collaborative approach helps organizations achieve faster releases and higher system uptime.
