Site Design Engineer – Fuel Cell & Power Generation

Location: South Windsor, CT
Job Type: Contract – 6+ Months
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Pay Rate: $35–$37/hour on W2
Travel: 30–40%
Schedule: Full-time

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Site Design Engineer to support the design and implementation of fuel cell and power generation systems at customer sites. This role will be responsible for developing optimized site layouts, coordinating with customers and EPC contractors, supporting construction activities, and ensuring designs meet applicable safety, construction, and code requirements.

The ideal candidate will have 6+ years of engineering experience in site design, power generation, energy systems, industrial facilities, data centers, or similar complex infrastructure environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed site layouts and equipment arrangements for fuel cell and power generation systems.
  • Design layouts considering equipment placement, power distribution, MEP interfaces, maintenance access, safety, scalability, and future expansion.
  • Work directly with customers to understand site conditions, technical requirements, operational needs, and project constraints.
  • Collaborate with EPC contractors, civil engineering firms, construction teams, and internal engineering/product teams.
  • Review and optimize designs to reduce installation costs, construction time, and onsite labor.
  • Support the use of modular and prefabricated construction methods where appropriate.
  • Integrate power-generation systems with existing electrical, mechanical, structural, and site infrastructure.
  • Plan equipment adjacency, MEP areas, air intakes/exhaust, noise setbacks, crane access, maintenance clearances, and expansion areas.
  • Support the design of interfaces for cooling water, DI water, drains, gas/hydrogen supply, ventilation, exhaust, relief/vent stacks, condensate, and related utilities.
  • Conduct site surveys and field assessments to evaluate existing infrastructure, available space, utilities, grading, foundations, and site constraints.
  • Provide recommendations for site preparation, utility connections, foundations, and equipment installation.
  • Prepare and maintain CAD drawings, construction documentation, site layouts, permitting documentation, and technical reports.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable NFPA, OSHA, IEC, building codes, zoning, permitting, and safety requirements.
  • Support construction activities, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting as required.
  • Coordinate multiple stakeholders and ensure design deliverables are completed on schedule.
  • Travel approximately 30–40% to customer and project sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 6+ years of relevant engineering experience in site design, power generation, fuel cells, energy systems, industrial facilities, data centers, or similar environments.
  • Strong experience developing site layouts and construction drawings.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD/design software.
  • Experience working with EPC contractors, construction firms, engineering consultants, or similar project partners.
  • Strong understanding of construction standards, safety requirements, codes, and regulations.
  • Experience with mechanical and structural integration for onsite power generation or complex equipment installations.
  • Strong understanding of site surveys, construction planning, equipment placement, utilities, and infrastructure integration.
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and project coordination abilities.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 30–40%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience with fuel cell systems or distributed power generation.
  • Experience with generators, CHP/cogeneration, microgrids, renewable energy, or other power-generation systems.
  • Experience with data center infrastructure or critical power systems.
  • Hands-on experience with installation and commissioning of power-generation systems.
  • Experience with modular construction and prefabrication.
  • Knowledge of energy storage/BESS or hybrid energy systems.
  • Experience with permitting, zoning, and local authority requirements.
  • Experience optimizing designs for cost, construction efficiency, and long-term maintainability.
