What are some common challenges faced by Simulation Technologists in managing medical simulation scenarios?

Simulation Technologists often face the challenge of ensuring seamless operation of complex simulation equipment while adapting to last-minute changes in training scenarios. They must troubleshoot technical issues quickly to minimize disruptions and maintain realism for learners. Collaboration with educators, clinicians, and standardized patients is essential to align objectives and provide effective feedback. Staying current with evolving simulation technologies and best practices is also a key part of the role.

What is the difference between Simulation Technologist vs Simulation Technician?

AspectSimulation TechnologistSimulation Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in health sciences, engineering, or related field; certifications may include simulation-specific trainingOften requires a diploma or associate degree; certification is less common
Work EnvironmentHospitals, medical training centers, simulation labsMedical facilities, educational institutions, simulation centers
Job FocusDesign, setup, and operation of simulation scenarios; troubleshooting complex systemsAssisting with equipment setup, basic operation, and maintenance

The Simulation Technologist typically has more advanced education and handles complex simulation scenarios, while the Simulation Technician focuses on equipment support and basic operations. Both roles are essential in medical simulation environments but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

What is a Simulation Technologist?

A Simulation Technologist is a professional who manages and operates simulation equipment used in healthcare education and training. They are responsible for setting up, running, and troubleshooting high-fidelity manikins and other simulation devices to create realistic clinical scenarios for learners. Simulation Technologists often collaborate with educators to design scenarios, maintain simulation labs, and ensure all technology functions properly. Their work helps students and professionals practice clinical skills in a safe, controlled environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Simulation Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Technologist, you need a solid understanding of healthcare simulation practices, technical troubleshooting, and a background in health sciences or related fields, often supported by a bachelor’s degree or specialized simulation certification. Familiarity with simulation management software, audiovisual systems, high-fidelity mannequins, and learning management systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help Simulation Technologists collaborate with educators and maintain realistic learning environments. These competencies ensure smooth simulation operations, enhance educational outcomes, and support safe, effective training for healthcare professionals.

Job description

Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota's once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation - expanding what "mobility" means and how it serves society.

Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we're working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.
TEAM
The Automated Driving & ADAS organization focuses on developing a scalable, data-driven approach to autonomous and assisted driving software. We collaborate with partners across Toyota, offering numerous opportunities to integrate cutting-edge technology into consumer vehicles globally. To continuously improve and thoroughly test our driving systems, we build powerful developer workflows that leverage real-world data and state of the art in-house and third party simulation technologies. The simulation technologies we develop and integrate form the foundation of our virtual verification and validation efforts, enabling autonomy and ADAS stack development, regression testing, and model training.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The Simulation Core team is seeking an experienced Senior Simulation Engineer with a strong background in developing engines, frameworks and client APIs in Rust or C++, as well as Python. They will design and integrate simulation software with portability, modularity, and reusability in mind in order to meet the diverse needs of vehicular technology development and testing across Toyota programs. By championing best practices, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and mentoring developers, you will play a key role in building our critical AD/ADAS simulator tools.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Architect and extend our next generation core simulation technologies (e.g. world engine,  interfaces, scheduler, agent frameworks).

  • Drive the integration of core simulation technologies into solutions or workflows, ensuring end user requirements are met.

  • Analyze simulation results to identify gaps between simulated and real-world performance. Prioritize improvements in the core simulation and integration software.

  • Partner with ADAS autonomy, integration, and release teams to improve validation of ADAS software.

  • Help set the team roadmap to support the growing landscape of ADAS customers and data sources.

  • Demonstrate good design practices; alignment with stakeholders before, during, and after implementation is essential.

  • Propose and advocate for modern technologies and methodologies that can drive innovation and performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field highly preferred.

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Proven track record crafting well-designed, impactful solutions within allotted time and resource constraints.

  • Strong programming skills in Rust or C++.

  • Strong programming skills in Python.

  • Ability to think, design, and code for both the user's and simulator developer's perspectives.

  • An infectious self-driven passion for solving complex problems while learning new techniques and technologies!

NICE TO HAVES
  • Experience with building real-time systems (a requirement of simulations for driver assistance and hardware in the loop scenarios).

  • Knowledge of one or more cloud compute platforms, such as AWS.

  • Experience with container technologies like Docker and container management systems like Kubernetes.

  • Experience with build systems, continuous integration, and/or continuous deployment (CI/CD).

  • Experience in the automotive and/or self-driving autonomy domain.

The base pay ranges from $140,000 to $230,000 per year.

Your base salary is one part of your total compensation. We offer a base salary, short-term and long-term incentives, and a comprehensive benefits package. The total compensation offered to an employee will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, location, and level.
