Caterpillar's BCP division is hiring a Senior Performance/Simulation/Application Engineer supporting Roll Over and Falling Object Protective Structures (ROPS/FOPS) design, validation, and certification at the Clayton Machine Development Center (CMDC) in Clayton, NC area.
Role Summary
As a Senior Performance/Simulation/Application Engineer, you will be responsible for evaluating, developing, and validating ROPS and FOPS structures for heavy construction equipment. You will use advanced finite element analysis (FEA) methods to meet structural strength and stiffness, manufacturability, and cost targets. You will work closely with design, test, and analysis teams; support testing and process test data; and build, correlate, and utilize FEA models in support of new product development and field issue resolution. To be successful, you will demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and determination to resolve issues and maintain high quality standards.
What You'll Do (Job Duties):
  • Build, run, and correlate finite element (FEA) models using Abaqus, NASTRAN, and LS-DYNA for static, dynamic, and non-linear analyses solutions.
  • Develop ROPS/FOPS structural solutions that meet strength, stiffness, manufacturing, and cost targets.
  • Partner with design engineers and provide input to generate efficient and robust structural concepts and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Support validation testing through gage mapping, test setup guidance, data analysis, and correlation of test results to simulation models.
  • Continuously improve analysis quality and efficiency by collaborating with the simulation and analysis team and broader community.
  • Clearly communicate analysis results and technical recommendations through written reports and verbal presentations.
  • Engage other engineers and technical specialists as needed to address detailed technical challenges.
What You Have (Core Skills):
  • Degree Requirement: Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace preferred)
  • Experience Requirement: ROPS/FOPs design and analysis experience in construction machinery design. Proficient in Abaqus software.
  • Accuracy & Attention to Detail: Ability to interpret and work from detailed engineering drawings and technical specifications with high accuracy and attention to detail to deliver high quality, compliant results.
  • Technical Excellence: Brings good mechanical aptitude and a solid understanding of engineering principles to solve complex problems effectively. Demonstrates expertise in applying technical knowledge to ensure robust and reliable designs.
  • Effective Communication & Teamwork: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively within and across teams and organizational levels. Collaborates effectively with team and stakeholders and able to maintain composure and flexibility under pressure.
  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:
  • Progressive experience of general analysis and multiple commercial and non-linear FEA tools (e.g. LS-DYNA, NASTRAN).
  • Experience with nonlinear material behavior, nonlinear bolted joint analysis, weld/metal fatigue, dynamics, isolation systems, and digital signal processing is highly desired.

Summary Pay Range:
$112,710.00 - $169,060.00
