Recycling Sorters work as quality control line workers by hand sorting recyclable materials and trash from the recycling stream. Sorters are responsible to ensure unacceptable materials are removed from recycling so that recyclable materials are acceptable for sale to mills or brokers.

Shift: 6:00am - 8:00pm M-F

Responsibilities of Position:

  • Perform sorting duties in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies
  • Utilize proper PPE and comply with Lock Out Tag Out procedures consistently
  • Inspect materials and sort items or materials into designated areas according to type, size, condition, color, or paper grade
  • Pull contaminants out of paper or off of floor
  • Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping
  • Report system problems immediately to management
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and surrounding area
  • Dump boxes and containers of material into designated area(s)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position will not manage employees

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

  • Ability to distinguish between various recyclable materials
  • Self-starter, aggressive work ethic and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to understand and comply with safety protocols
  • Good verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with other personnel and management

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:

  • Continuously lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
  • Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 75 lbs
  • Frequently working outside
  • Continuously working in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Occasionally stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Rarely climbing and/or balancing
  • Rarely sitting
  • Continuously standing
  • Frequently walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:

  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
