Job Description

The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining 12,750 miles of sidewalk and more than 185,000 corners throughout the City. The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a unit within SIM, is committed to providing pedestrian (curb) ramps citywide that meet applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. Pedestrian ramps are a critical component in providing safe and accessible means of travel throughout New York City. Pedestrian ramps provide access on and off our streets and sidewalk and are an essential tool for all pedestrians, especially aging New Yorkers and persons with disabilities.
PRP is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to join a fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative engineering team. This team is responsible for the design and management of pedestrian ramp projects; design review for a variety of capital reconstruction initiatives; development of inspection criteria; construction quality assurance and quality control technical assistance; and the tracking of pedestrian ramps data and ADA compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) throughout the city right-of way.
Under the supervision of a Senior Manager/Licensed Engineer, the selected candidate will:
- Evaluate existing pedestrian ramps
- Develop accessible, ADA-compliant design solutions, including geometric layout and grading.
- Review project plans for compliance with the ADA and applicable standards.
- Coordinate with internal DOT units, external agencies, contractors, consultants, vendors, and members of the public to ensure successful implementation of accessibility requirements.
- Identify and resolve design issues, answer accessibility-related questions and assess technical infeasibilities
- Conduct and participate in site visits related to pedestrian ramps design and construction.
- Manage pedestrian ramp contracts throughout the project life cycle.
In coordination with NYC DDC, the Engineering Team applies its technical and project management expertise to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and within scope. Key responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing the preparation of the project scope
- Conducting initial and recurring evaluation of project budgets
- Monitoring and assessing project schedules
Identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies to support successful project completion.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
