Educational Sign Language Interpreter Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Educational Sign Language Interpreter to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a school setting. This role is critical in ensuring students have full access to classroom instruction, educational activities, and communication with teachers, staff, and peers.

Position Summary

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter facilitates communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within the educational environment. Using American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication methods as appropriate, the interpreter provides real-time interpretation of classroom instruction, discussions, school activities, and related educational interactions.

The ideal candidate is fluent in ASL, highly professional, and committed to supporting student achievement through effective communication services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and ASL into spoken language.
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, staff, and peers.
  • Support student access to classroom instruction, discussions, and educational activities.
  • Interpret during meetings, school events, and other educational settings as needed.
  • Maintain professional standards, confidentiality, and ethical practices.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and school administrators to support student success.
  • Promote an inclusive learning environment for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • Maintain compliance with all district, state, and federal requirements.
QualificationsRequired
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Ability to effectively interpret instructional and conversational communication in an educational setting.
  • Compliance with all professional standards of practice.
  • Current CPR certification, if applicable.
  • Current TB screening, PPD, or chest X-ray, if required.
  • Current health certificate, if applicable.
  • Must meet all federal, state, and local employment requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Preferred
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
  • State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate, if applicable.
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification, if required.
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification, if required.
  • Previous experience working in a school or educational environment.
