Job description

Traffic Signal Technician

Rate of Pay: $17.88 - $20.39 Status: Open Until Filled This is an entry level position that requires the ability to execute both unskilled and semi-skilled work while providing support regarding the installation and maintenance of all traffic signals, school flashers, fiber optic network, traffic signs, pavement, and curb markings used by the city.

Responsibilities:

  • Aids in the installation of traffic signals and controllers at new intersections, including all internal and external wiring. Cuts pavement and installs signal loops, installs guy wires and lashing cable on overhead lines, digs holes for steel support poles, pours concrete, builds rebar cages for poles, and sets forms and poles.
  • Provides support in maintaining after-hours call rotation with Traffic Signal Technician.
  • Capable of providing support with troubleshooting, malfunctioning traffic control devices and completing necessary repairs or replacement in a limited capacity.
  • Gives aid in the installation and maintenance existing fiber-optic network as well as any new additions to the City of Marietta Traffic Network.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and storage of all tools and equipment used in performing maintenance and repairs (aerial equipment, pavement saws, generators, meters, etc.).
  • Assists in making and installing signs and painting road markings.
  • Assists with completing signal and cabinet maintenance.
  • Provides assistance with completing sign maintenance and reflectivity testing.
  • Capable and willing to provide assistance, under the direction of assigned technician, with maintaining accurate reports and documentation in regard to construction maintenance and repair work performed.
  • Capable to provide limited support as a first responder regarding trouble calls associated with signs and signals.
  • Provides assistance with the maintenance of the signs and signals shop area.
  • May be required to perform duties in other divisions within the department in certain circumstances, including, but not limited to periods of heavy workload, natural disasters, and city events. These duties should not require specialized training or certification and will most likely involve manual labor tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of two years' experience in outside electrical construction.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in heavy manual outside labor required, preferably in the construction field.
  • Experience and skill in both reading and working from blue-prints-plans and producing layout work from prints.
  • Experience in general methods, materials and equipment used in production of street signs and other types of signage production.
  • Ability to acquire and implement sign installation methods.
  • Ability to report to work in a punctual and reliable fashion.
  • Must possess a current I.M.S.A Work Zone Safety certification at time of hire or obtain within 1 year of hire date.
  • Must possess a current flagging/ traffic control certification at time of hire or obtain a GDOT flagging certificate within one year from date of hire.
  • Ability to carry out instructions and perform heavy repetitive manual tasks.
  • Working knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Ability to function in a team environment.
  • Skill and ability to safely operate required electronic and mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Documented training or experience in the operation and manipulation of a bucket truck or aerial equipment. Skills testing in this area will be performed prior to an offer being made.
  • Must be in good physical condition with the ability to perform heavy manual work outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must pass a drug screen and physical exam at time of hire.
  • Ability to pass assessment testing at the end of the working test period with a score of 90 percent or above.
  • Must have a valid Georgia Driver's License at time of hire and a satisfactory seven-year driving history, to include no DUI's in the last five years.
